Barry, does this look like the same as bug 459910? Can you try turning off mail.winsearch.enable, as suggested in 459910#c9, and see if the crashing goes away?
This sounds a lot like my bug 486980 from beta5. Indeed, this constant crashing happened to me, for the first 6 hours of running beta6 after I upgraded from beta5. After a while, Eudora started acting well! It's as though the beta6 version had to chew through all 210,000 messages on my hard disk, vetting them for the new program. Perhaps a routine is correcting all the indveraent "important" labels?
After this "stress test" (pardon the politically correct joke), Eudora beta6 still throws an occasional error, looking for a locked or unavailable impab.mab or abook.mab file. As before, the crashes are much less frequent if I unclick "Enable Global Search and Indexer". Try that.
Say, what does "Enable global search and Indexer" actually do, anyway?

Thanks for the suggestion Jeff, but I didn't need to do anything. The constant crashing went away on its own, just as it did for Lester. I think it took about 4 days.
I had downloaded & installed Thunderbird because Eudora was crashing even as I was writing emails. Thunderbird was stable and allowed me to continue working. (Too bad they just don't make Thunderbird look like Eudora and be done with it.) Anyway, I was only using Eudora to redirect messages and "wammo" all of a sudden it started working properly.
My only two ongoing problems now with Eudora are:
1. Clicking on links does not open a browser.
2. When I'm entering an address the LDAP loggin window opens and I must click enter twice before I can complete/find the address.
Any ideas with those?

If you are able to reproduce this, please try try to reproduce it in Thunderbird 3.0.1 (http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/). If the problem is present in Thunderbird please file a bug against Thunderbird. If the problem is NOT present in Thunderbird please let me know or re-open the bug here.
Thanks, Matt

All is sweetness & light, in both Eudora 8beta8 and Thunderbird 3.0. I've not tried 3.0.1
