User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.11) Gecko/2009060215 Firefox/3.0.11 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.22 (20090605) The New Message Arrival sound file plays while Thunderbird is otherwise idle. I believe this to be when a legitimate check is being made for mail on the server. On hearing the audio queue, I return to the machine but find no new email. I do not know if mail has arrived and been lost or if the sound is played under false circumstances. The pertinent selections are: Options > General > When a New Message Arrives (1) Show an alert; (2) Play a sound: Use the following Sound file. A file name is provided and the correct sound plays. This feature usually works and plays the sound and displays new mail along with the popup. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Cannot reproduce, seems to be random. 2. 3. The most critical issue not knowing if legitimate mail arrived which triggered the sound and was then lost.

I believe that incoming email is sometimes being lost based on additional observations. I have several mail filters setup. One email had been trapped by the server as possible junk. When I released it the sound file played but the email did not show up in the designated folder. On a separate occasion email sent to myself and another person (uses same email service) arrived in the other person's inbox but not mine. In this case the email should have failed all the filters and been placed in my inbox.
When this happens are there any messages in Tools -> Error console ?
This content found at the time question was ask about contents of Error Console, a time later than immediately following suspected loss of email. Not sure if it pertains.
The sound file played and no mail arrived. The error console had the contents shown in the attachment "Bug 501727 EC ss 20090707.jpg".
This is a .txt file with the contents of the file pointed to by the link illustrated in attachment file: Bug 501727 EC ss 20090707.jpg
Another occurrence of sound file playing without any mail appearing.
Another occurrence of sound file playing without any mail displaying. This is a screen shot of the error console. Content of the file pointed to will also be attached.
Content of the file that the error console link was pointing to.
Robert does it work if you use the sound system alert instead of choosing a specific file ?
I have changed from my selected sound file to the default and will respond as soon as I note particular behavior. This change made based on Comment #10 from Ludovic Hirlimann.
With default sound announcement choice selected, continue getting the sound without the display of any new mail. This is the Error Console. Text of file from link will follow.
Problem continues with use of default mail arrival sound.
It happeans also here Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.3a1pre) Gecko/20091208 Lightning/1.1a1pre Shredder/3.1a1pre ID:20091208032443 When I set off option "automatically download new messages" I think that this is related to messages filter that I have on this account. Account is stored in global folder. No message in error console. I can provide a pop3 log if necessary. ps: my filters copy or move messages in others folders as child of Inbox folder on local folders. I can't find (at this moment) the dupe of this.
Version: 2.0 → Trunk
ps: it happeans only at startup (if "check for new messages at startup" is checked)

Hello, I would like to confirm this bug. I am using Thunderbird 3.1.6 on Windows XP without any add-ons. User-agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.12) Gecko/20101027 Thunderbird/3.1.6 I have 2 POP accounts going to the Local Folders Inbox, without any filters, and default sound configuration. One of my accounts is set up to check for new messages every 10 minutes, and I have verified that the "new messages" notification goes off every 10 minutes, without any new email actually arriving. I have also verified that this is not due to messages being lost by checking my Webmail interface (and because these 2 accounts do not get a lot of email). For me it is totally reproducible: just set "check for new messages every x minutes" and you'll see the bug happening every x minutes...
Hi! I don't know, if I should open a new bug, because I think now this behaviour might occur of another reason: I have updated to Th 12 yesterday (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:12.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/12.0) and since the update the following happens almost every time new mails have been received from my pop3-accounts: About half a minute to a minute after the mails have been recieved, filtered and correctly displayed in taskbar, there's another notification of new mails (envelope icon in taskbar with sound), stating that "Local Folders" have new mail. There's never any new mail then (I don't have the impression, that mail are lost, they just already arrived one minute ago). And you can only force the icon to vanish again by clicking the "Local Folders" entry itself in the folders tree. As I think that no mails are lost so far, I would say the bug isn't critical, but however really annoying. Please tell me if a new bug-entry is necessary to get enough attention to this bug. Thanks.
(In reply to Göran Schmidt from comment #19) > I have updated to Th 12 yesterday If it worked ok before and only showed up after updating to 12.0, that's more likely bug 748997 which should be fixed in 12.0.1 (I don't know if that also fixes the issues mentioned here, but given that a substantial part of the database handling was modified for 12.0 it would be worth reconfirming whether or not anybody here can still reproduce the issue with 12.0.1).
Does this still happen in TB16? If yes, it should be confirmed. If no, it should be closed. Or duped...
