when I write an email, with "spell check as you type" some words are marked as incorrect, right here, but sometimes, if I continued to write, they are no longer marked.
In this url you can see a screenshot of a sample mail, where I have highlighted, with arrows, two misspelled words the spell checker has stopped highlight: http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff28/simonbcn/especial/captura_004.jpg
Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Thunderbird 3 beta
2. Compose mail.
3. Write a text with several misspelled words, and then continue writing, deleting letters, changing formats until it happens.
Actual Results:
Sometimes, if I continued to write, they are no longer marked.
Expected Results:
Misspelled words should be kept always marked as incorrect.

This bug has occurred for me only since the update to 3.0.4:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100317 Thunderbird/3.0.4
The behaviour as erratic as described in the original comment - in the sentence "blarg should be underlined because blarg is not a word" and sometimes both instances of 'blarg' will be underlined, sometimes only one, and sometimes neither. It seems to occur more often when characters are deleted following the text concerned - perhaps a repainting error?

I can't reproduce it in Thunderbird 3.0.4
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100423 Thunderbird/3.0.4
I follow the steps provided by Simon :
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Thunderbird 3 beta
2. Compose mail.
3. Write a text with several misspelled words, and then continue writing,
deleting letters, changing formats until it happens.
Actual Results:
Sometimes, if I continued to write, they are no longer marked.
And all seems to be correct... I have attached a screenshot with the same text that Simon has used.

I don't see, in your screen-shot, any word with format (italic, bold, etc...).
Same test and today I obtain other result, incorrect too. I attach one screen-shot.

I have found it using:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.5pre) Gecko/20100427 Thunderbird/3.1b2
Ok I have found that I can't reproduce it always but it's reproducible sometimes like Simón says in the previous comments.
It appear in the 3 step:
3. Write a text with several misspelled words, and then continue writing,
deleting letters, changing formats until it happens.
Thanks

After a lot of experimentation, I've been able to reliably reproduce the bug on my own copy:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100317
Thunderbird/3.0.4
Steps to reproduce (assuming 'qq' and 'qqq' are not in your dictionary):
1. Start a new message
2. Click in the message body
3. Press precisely the following keys:
q
q
q
left arrow
backspace
end
space
q
q
q
left arrow
backspace
(Using delete rather than backspace also words.) Before pressing the final backspace, you have the text 'qq qqq' with the 'qq' underlined (the 'qqq' isn't underline as the cursor hasn't exited that word yet). After pressing backspace, you're left with 'qq qq' and the underline disappears from the first 'qq'. Strangely, if you press the right arrow key rather than the end key, the bug does not occur.
I am using Thunderbird 3.1.9 on Windows XP and I am experiencing what appears to be this problem. The steps above do result in a loss of highlighting from the misspelt words (whereas previously I thought it only happened if I had started correcting mistakes).
I had originally filed this as being https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=632296 but it sounds more like this issue.

Since Bug 632296 is now resolved as a duplicate of this, the platform for this bug should have "x86 Windows XP" added to it (I don't seem to have permission to edit that).

I am continuing to experience this bug on Thunderbird 11.0.1. Win 7 64-bit.
It is admittedly difficult to reproduce. But it seems occur most often when editing sentences after ones with misspelling or by pasting after a misspelling. I can usually get it to show by pasting
"This sentance has a misspelling. This sentence alsoo has one."
repeatedly in the message window. Only the misspellings in the last-pasted instance have the squiggly line indicator.

Hereby confirm the error.
Underlined spelling errors disappear if you corrected a mistake. You have to change the language, then the underlined error reappear. Now you can correct a mistake. The underscores disappear, and so on ...
Have the program started without extensions: The same problem.
The dictionary is not to blame, because I also have other dictionaries with the same phenomenon.
My OS: Win 7 64 bit / 16 GB RAM / 5-Core Intel
Thunderbird 16.0.2

I'm making this a duplicate of bug 922648. No need to have two bugs that describe the same thing.
