For newsgroups I have setup Thunderbird to only display threads with unread messages. I don't care about all the other already marked as read threads. Doing that I don't see already read messages from those threads anymore. The thread starts with the oldest unread message. Former ones aren't displayed anymore. See the given attachment. I wanna see the whole thread and not only new messages.
I don't have any filters set. Just the above mentioned view settings.

Asking for blocking-thunderbird3. This is a very annoying issue when following threads with a couple of messages in it like what we have on md.planning normally.

Henrik, how did you do that? Is this an upgrade from 2.0 issue? Did you use the default news view pref? View | threads with unread is working fine for me.

upgrade from 2.0 worked fine - I set up a couple newsgroups and set them to use threads with unread manually, and then ran 3.0 b4 and it used the threads with unread setting.

David, I'm on vacation right now so my replies will come in a bit slower. What do you mean with default news view pref? AFAIR I haven't changed anything and it started to happen at some time during b2 or b3 I believe. It would be great if you can tell me which prefs I would have to check to exclude any wrongly set pref.

Henrik, there are hidden prefs that control the default views for certain types of folders - mailnews.default_news_view_flags - for the default for newsgroups to be threads with unread, you would set this to 2. But this only affects new newsgroups, and since you didn't set this pref, it couldn't be involved.
I tried upgrading from 2.0 to 3.0 and didn't see an issue, so I'm going to take this off the blocking list. Perhaps there was something that happened during the 3.0 dev cycle that messed these up, but I wouldn't block for that. Does setting the views back to threads with unread using the view menu make things work the way you want?

Ok, I digged into this problem and I have found the cause. It's a broken .msf file. I will attach the whole news folder as attachment so you can play with it. Manually deleting the .msf file resolves the problem.
Asking for blocking-tb3 the last time. Please reconsider if it is worth or not.

Just extract it into an existing news folder and check md.platform. All unread messages aren't displayed anymore when revisiting the newsgroup until you remove the .msf file.

I'll look at this, but I don't think it's blocking.

Steps to reproduce on NEW account on Windows:
1. Subscribe to new newsgroup
2. Mark all messages as read (Shift+C)
3. Mark some messages in different threads as Unread
4. Change view settings: View>Threads>Threads with Unread.
5. Change view settings: View>Threads>Unread. Till this moment everything works as expected.
6. Change view settings: View>Threads>Threads with Unread. Now we have problem: nothing changes, shown only unread messages.
7. Change view settings: View>Threads>All
8. Change view settings: View>Threads>Threads with Unread. Again everything works as expected.
It seems that this bug occurs only after was applied "View>Threads>Unread". If "View>Threads>Threads with Unread" is applied after "View>Threads>All", everything is OK.
I'd mark this bug as blocking.

Attachment DR-1 shows the effect of selecting [View > Threads > Unread] followed by selecting [View > Threads > Threads with Unread].

Attachment DR-2 shows how threading should appear if this bug were fixed. This attachment was obtained by selecting [View > Threads > Unread] followed by [View > Threads > All] followed by [View > Threads > Threads with Unread]. (See the end of comment #9.) The middle selection -- [View > Threads > All] -- should not be necessary.
Both attachments DR-1 and DR-2 show five threads. These images were generated just before 11:00am PST today. Note that three threads in DR-2 begin with underlined, non-bold headers for earlier messages (initial, not replies) than appear for the same threads in DR-1, where the same threads begin with replies.
