Just noticed this in 20090930 build, but it could have been around for a while.
I have a number of virtual folders based on very simple criteria such as:
Subject contains "bug" These have been set up for a very long time.
Double-click on any of them to open a new tab, or use the menu to open in a new tab, or window results in a blank tab or window.
Tried in safe mode as well as creating a new virtual folder with same results.
Problem persists in:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.4pre) Gecko/20091006 Lightning/1.0pre Shredder/3.0pre ID:20091006032243

Forgot to add that viewing the saved search message renders fine in the preview pane.

Reporter anything in error console?
ps: I have only one saved search (from TB 2) in Local folders.
you refer to saved searches in local folders or separate account?
I try also creating a new saved search in separate account and here work fine.

Nothing in the error console.
I'm pretty convinced this is a real bug, possibly dependent on some particular in my profile.
This worked fine for me around 20090830
I'll triage some to get some better steps to re-produce.
Just some additional observations for now.
When the blank tab shows up, if there are unread messages in the saved search, then typing "n" for next unread, shows the proper message.
On the blank tab typing "f" renders the first message in the search most of the time. In others searches, it displays the last message that showed in the preview pane.
More testing to come.

I may be out of my depth here, but I've just downloaded TB3 RC1 into a VM and have hit the same problem. Established 3 saved searches (with selection criteria based on tags) and message list display is fine, but double-clicking or open any of the saved search messages results in a blank tab (or window).
Opening the same message outside of the saved search (from Inbox for example) opens absolutely fine.
Messages are NOT sync'd on the local machine but are stored on IMAP server (Courier-IMAP on SuSE 10.3) and I'm running TB3 RC1 (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091121 Thunderbird/3.0) on Win7 RC.
I don't know what an r-range is but if you can explain what extra info you need, I will do my best to provide it.
Thanks.

Happy, see http://www.rumblingedge.com/2009/02/24/howto-find-regression-windows-through-manual-binary-search/ visit http://www.mibbit.com/chat/?server=irc.mozilla.org&channel=%23tb-qa if you need further assistance.
Joe, do you still see this problem? Have you blown the database away since? (btw, double click folder should not open a folder in a new tab).

Wayne,
I'll go back and check again, but from memory, still broken for me.
Tried the following:
Re-created saved searches
Tried with folders other than inbox, local folders with small number messages.
Other profiles..same..broken
Tried various layout options.
Safe mode..still broken
Even fails for me in TB3.1a1pre with an entirely different profile.
One thing that I might do differently, I usually run with the preview pane
dragged down out of site. If I drag it up to be visible, the saved search message does appear on double-click, but there is nothing in the tab "tab"
(the tab description)
Further clicking on other saved search messages results in duplicate tabs
all with whatever is currently in the preview pane.
Any other suggestions. :)

really, really odd that there'd be nothing in error console.

I have the same problem with the release version of TB3.
However the tabs open as they should after choosing more than one folder to search (in the Properties of a saved search).

OK, looks like I didn't find this earlier. There's a fix for this in bug 533170, so I'm going to mark this a dup of that.
