If you focus on Location bar, delete any text that's in it, type ".NET" like a part of URI character strings and press enter.
You will not get search result page for ".NET". But You get error page for "Firefox can't find the server at www..net."
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Click in Location bar.
2. delete any text that's in it.
3. Type ".NET".
4. Press enter.
Actual Results:
You get error page for "Firefox can't find the server at www..net."
Expected Results:
You should get search result page for ".NET".
I can confirm this on FF 3.5. I also have a related issue where having a search where the first word ends with a colon, instead of searching, I get a protocol error, i.e. if I type the following (highly contrived) example in the location bar:
games: the best
I am told in a dialog box:
Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (games) isn't associated with any program.
Instead FF should, if it finds an invalid protocol, do a web search with the term, instead of throwing an error, and similarly for an invalid web address, as above.

I can confirm both comment #0 and comment #1 on Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:2.0b11pre) Gecko/20110202 Firefox/4.0b11pre ID:20110202030356
Not sure if this is a real bug as if you meant to search you should use the "search bar" not the "location bar" IMHO.
