That is fine. But it seems like there is no way to stop the animation. I would expect Esc to stop it, just like it does in Firefox. Reproducible: Always
Mads could you save one of those emails where the gif doesn't stop and attach it on the bug ?

Bug 605197 hints that image.animation_mode should control this. Setting this in thunderbird works fine. But still: I would expect Esc to stop it.
