STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1. Try to send an email with a recent Shredder nightly.
ACTUAL RESULTS:
Dialog box appears, saying:
> Sending of message failed.
> Please verify that your Mail & Newsgroups account settings are correct
> and try again.
NO BUG:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6pre) Gecko/20091106 Shredder/3.0pre
BUGGY:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6pre) Gecko/20091107 Shredder/3.0pre
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6pre) Gecko/20091110 Shredder/3.0pre
This happens every time I try to send an email. I experienced this with two different SMTP servers -- smtp.mozilla.org and smtp.gmail.com. (Both work in pre-1107 nightlies; both fail in the 1107 nightly and beyond.)
Receiving mail still works fine, though.

Assuming I understand where Shredder nightly builds get generated from, the following are the "guilty" pushlog-ranges:
https://hg.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla-1.9.1/pushloghtml?startdate=2009-11-06+02%3A00%3A00&enddate=2009-11-07+03%3A30%3A00
https://hg.mozilla.org/releases/comm-1.9.1/pushloghtml?startdate=2009-11-06+02%3A00%3A00&enddate=2009-11-07+03%3A30%3A00
Nothing there looks particularly suspicious, though...
One other note -- I've reproduced this on two different machines (both running Ubuntu 9.10). So, this isn't just an accidental misconfiguration on the machine I'm on right now.

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6pre) Gecko/20091110 Lightning/1.0pre Shredder/3.0pre
works fine for me via smtp.gmail.com.
Have you tried running in safe mode?
Can you get an SMTP log of this issue? (https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging)

I had the same issue around the same time. The culprit was enigmail, daniel any chances that you use enigmail ? If so can you update to the latest nightly ?

I had the exact same problem. Disabling enigmail or upgrading it to the latest nightly build fixed the issue for me.

Marking blocking- on the assumption that this is actually an EnigMail problem and will be marked INVALID. If that turns out not to be true, feel free to renominate.

Enigmail was indeed the culprit! I'd forgotten that I even have it installed. :)
I had an old-ish nightly build of Enigmail (from http://enigmail.mozdev.org/download/nightly.php ). It was labeled 0.97a, but that's not super-helpful, because all Enigmail nightlies in recent history have that same version number.
Disabling that addon fixed the problem. Upgrading to the most recent nightly fixed the problem, too. (The upgraded version is still labeled 0.97a, but it says "build date: 2009-11-11" on the website.)
