I tried Thunderbird 3.0 RC but it still does not quit nicely. It hangs and must be killed.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start Thunderbird 3.0 RC on Mac OS X Snow Leopard
2. Try to quit it
3.

I would include a crash log but it is too long for bugzilla. #fail
Does this happens when you start in safe-mode (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode) ?

When this happens do you still have connections open (netstat -a in a terminal will help you figure that out !)
I'm using the same platform, system and Thunderbird version and can reproduce this same problem but not if:
- Thunderbird runs in safe mode
- I quit Thunderbird after launch (that means without opening messages or folders — it only checks for new mail).
And: When it freezes, I get a "Non responding" note in Activity Monitor — and 99% CPU usage. (I can provide a sample from the process)
And BTW: I have Enigmail 1.0 installed — maybe there's some conflict or something…
Are you running Thunderbird 64 bits ? is your OS installed in 64 bits ?

Thunderbird is not running in 64bit mode (according to Activity Monitor), the "about" window shows: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; sk; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091130 Thunderbird/3.0

I've got a nice clean installation of Snow Leopard (10.6.2), so the kernel should run in 32-bit mode (if that's what you want to know). But of course most of the processes run in 64-bit mode.
Hey, I just noticed, that juhasecke also does have a localized version. Maybe there is a clue — just guessing.
I found another interesting thing: If I quit Thunderbird after waking from sleep (without any additional activity), it quits normally. Of course, when the computer is in sleep mode, network is down (I'm using AirPort) and reconnects after waking up. Maybe it plays a role, and maybe not, because I cannot reproduce it by going offline and online via File menu in Thunderbird.

what do you mean by "no additional activity"?
Severity: normal → critical
Keywords: hang

I mean without opening messages. If I open any message, TB will hang on quit. It doesn't matter whether there is already an open message (after waking), just when I open another one.

Actually I tried to experiment a bit, and found that TB will also hang on quit, when I check new mail (via the "get new messages" button) — without opening anything. It seems, that some types of activity will prevent it from quitting normally, some not. For example: I wake the Mac from sleep, and after 10 mins can still quit TB nicely (although it had to check for new mail automatically). Sometimes it's not easy to reproduce this, but if you open a message, it will hang on quit for sure.
Some other info:
There's a smillar bug 508263 — maybe it's the same problem (hangs on quit, 100% CPU usage on 1 core, etc…).
BTW: This was a clean installation of TB 3rc3 (old preferences and mailboxes and other stuff were deleted prior to install), the mail account (Gmail using IMAP) was setup using the wizard after installation.
Just a note. The bug is still in the final release.

Confirmed. Just installed 3.0 and it's still there…
Just found another interesting thing — if you synchronize your mail account using File > Offline > Download/Sync Now..., and do quit right after that, TB will quit nicely. BTW: You don't have to go offline — just let it update your mailboxes.
what connections do you see with netstat?
Summary: Thunderbird 3.0RC 2 does not quit nicely and must be killed → Thunderbird 3.0RC 2 does not quit, high cpu, and must be killed
This is what netstat said on my system during a TB hang. (There's also Firefox running with bugzilla…)
juhasecke, have a look at https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Shutdown_Hang and please supply as much of the information as possible

Thanks for this last hint. Ok, here is what happened:

1. In safe-mode TB quits nicely three times, still hanging when starting in normal mode.

2. netstat does not produce any line with thunderbird

3. After disabling Enigmail TB quits nicely. Too bad because I initially thought about TB, because Mail.app wasn't able to gpg my mail.

4. I've got this message from Enigmail on the console:

Registering Enigmail account manager extension.
Enigmail account manager extension registered.
Warning: unrecognized command line flag -foreground
this should not be happening! arrgggggh!
With the nightly build of Enigmail TB quits nicely so far.
