Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Wait for new mail
2.See new mail pop-up
3.No sound.

Can you check your settings? Specifically, look at Edit->Preferences->General->Play a sound -- should be set to 'Default system alert sound for new mail'. Also, I assume you've checked that Thunderbird 2 can still play the sound (different versions can be installed side-by-side).

Yes - settings are the same in both.
I have TB2, TB3 and Shredder all set up to use the same profile.
In TB2 it works fine. The beep notifies as well as the pop-up, it also does the same for server log-in errors.
In TB3 only the pop-ups - no beeps. :-(

Just to be absolutely clear - I am referring here only to the system bell (mother board sounder) not anything to do with system sound - as in sound cards.
I do have a sound card, but that is connected to an external sound system which is switched off 99% of the time - hence the need for the beep to notify new mail.

This about the system sounder (as used by the BIOS during boot) not .wav files etc. This is not IMHO a duplicate of the other bug. See comment #4

I have the same problem/request
On windows XP, on a system with no speakers, the system beep was very useful because 2 computers sharing one screen, and that was the only way to know mail had arrived when you were working on the second comp.
I have tried modifying options in the control panel, to no sounds, and etc. None seems to make thunderbird beep, and the beep works with outlook.

Yes this is really annoying!
You could try TB2 - just to confirm this. Extract it to it's own folder in your home (e.g. ~/tb2) and run it from there with ~/tb2/thunderbird/thunderbird. It will use your current profile, but you may need to set up your mail accounts unless you upgraded from TB2 in the past. It stores the mail accounts in a different way. This won't affect your TB3 installation, and any mail received while using TB2 will be there in TB3 when you run it.
I have four versions of TB installed and flip from one to the other with no issues. (Only run one at once!)
Barry
I also have this problem.
windows XP, Thunderbird 3.1.4, in the control panel: no sounds.
Edit->Preferences->General->Play a sound - set to 'Default system
alert sound for new mail'
No beep.
In Thunderbird 2 beep works.

I have same problem as others: The New Mail Notification sound stopped working. It had been working fine. Both the default system sound and the "use this sound" options don't work.
Thunderbird V. 3.1.4; Windows XP Professional, Ver. 2002, Service Pack 2

Wayne,
I am already running Lanikai with daily updates,
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); en-UK; rv:1.9.2.16pre) Gecko/20110309 Lightning/1.0b2 Lanikai/3.1.10pre
but since the original report Mandriva blacklisted pcspkr module.
I have reversed this and tested the beep in KDE systemsettings.
I have system bell set as notification sound device in KDE and I have set mail notification in TB to "play a sound" and "Default system sound for mail notification"
Still no beep though ;-(
Any suggestions?

Further testing confirms that with TB2 the beep works fine using my current profile.
With Lanikai using the same profile it still fails.
The pop-up notifications do work.

I believe I am experiencing this under Icedove 17.0.7. However, I also have problem with notifications via normal sounds and via popups, so I'm not quite sure my problem is specific to the system bell notification.
Is anyone not experiencing this bug under Linux?

Per bug 1162788 this should be working.
If it is not working (preferably with current beta) then please state OS and version.
