There are 2 bugs dealing with sound in Linux https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=543842 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=534033 BUT it was not Ubuntu, it was Fedora A bug has been created in RedHat bug database: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=561551 Kevin, do you think that your bug is similar than bug 534033 ? https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=534033 Maybe your problem is coming from an extension. Could you please try to start Thunderbird in SafeMode: http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode If problem is not coming back in Safe Mode, please give us a list of your extensions. Nightly Tester Tools extension may help you. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/6543 Tools => Nightly Tester Tools => Copy List of Extensions to Clipboard If problem is coming back in Safe Mode, could you please check your error console (Tools => Error Console) and copy & paste any message in this bug.

There is another bug dealing with system alert: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=535955
[Sorry for the delay in responding on this - I have been "off the net" in the Grand Canyon.] I do not think this is same as bug 534033 - I am just getting "noise" (loud static sound). I am testing with a clean install, no pre-existing profile, no extensions. Just to be sure, I tested in Safe Mode - same problem. Error console shows this: Failed to load XPCOM component: /home/test/Desktop/thunderbird/components/libmozgnome.so Error: An error occurred updating the button_compact command: TypeError: this._treeElement is undefined Source File: chrome://global/content/globalOverlay.js Line: 86

Kevin, is your problem solved now that Bug 579877 is fixed?
Wayne - Just re-tested this (Miramar 3.3 alpha 1). Still not fixed.
