User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100409 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Firefox/3.6.3
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100404 Thunderbird/3.0.4
After I upgraded to Thunderbird 3.0.4, my usenet filters stopped working. When I went to Tools:Message Filters, none of my old filters were listed. When I tried to create new filters with Create Filter from Message, they wouldn't appear on the list of filters. When I created new filters using Tools:Message Filters:New..., they appeared on the list, but didn't actually work when I tested them using Run Filters on Message.
I tried renaming my ~/.thunderbird folder and creating a fresh account from scratch. The bug described above still occurred.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a fresh user account on a fresh install of Thunderbird 3.0.4. Subscribe to a group.
2. Try to create a filter as described above.
3.
Actual Results:
Filters didn't work.
Expected Results:
Filters should work.

Filter after the fact does not work with news accounts: see bug 178870. You'll have to wait for new messages to actually arrive to test them.

I was using Ubuntu Karmic Koala, and upgraded to Lucid Lynx. I believe the version distributed with Karmic was 2.0.0.23 or 2.0.0.24.

Thanks for pointing me to that one. But this bug report does not just report that filtering after the fact doesn't work. It also reports that the UI for creating new filters is broken.
