Raed I. Al-Fayez writes: Dear Gerv, My name is Raed Al-Fayez I am from SaudiNIC (.sa ccTLD registry in Saudi Arabia). As what you already should heard, We have got the approval from ICANN/IANA to operate and run the new IDN ccTLD for our country which is xn--mgberp4a5d4ar (our country name in the Arabic language السعودية ). http://www.icann.org/en/minutes/resolutions-22apr10-en.htm#sa In order to be ready and allow Mozilla applications to display our domain names in Unicode format (U-Label) can you please add our IDN ccTLD to the IDN-enabled TLDs. BTW, The IDN regulation policy: http://nic.net.sa/adn-en.php and the language table: http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5564 With best regards, Raed I. Al-Fayez

I have inspected the documents and found them satisfactory. Here is a patch. This is the first non-test IDN TLD to be added to Firefox. Therefore, it is recommended that once the change is made, the .sa registry test it quite carefully. :-) Gerv

Don't we also need to include a change to the eTLD data file?

It's going to be come increasingly difficult for people with one or two sets of international tools (keyboards, etc.) to maintain the TLD file in many languages/fonts. I wonder if we should permit punycode addresses in there too. They're normalized to that before use anyway, right?

Punycode makes it harder to check the validity of the list, see whether it's updated, etc. I'd much prefer to keep things as Unicode.

Debatable. *I* certainly couldn't tell you whether السودية was correct or should be السعودية, but I can tell xn--mgberp4a5d4ar from xn--mgberp4a5b4ar.

Peter, Pam: this bug is about the IDN TLD whitelist, not the eTLD file :-) I've opened a new bug for that change - bug 564583. We need to find out the registration policy shapes of these new TLDs, so we get the entries right; we can ask the people who have contacted me for IDN TLD whitelist inclusion. Gerv

I tried finding an active السعودية domain, however I could not find one. used htttp://www.السعودية.السعودية for testing in the address bar and in the net error page it was displayed as the expected unicode characters and not punycode. Verified Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.3a6pre) Gecko/20100617 Minefield/3.7a6pre Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.4) Gecko/20100611 Firefox/3.6.4

(In reply to comment #7) > I tried finding an active السعودية domain, however I could not find one. For the record, you can find some by searching google for "site:.السعودية" (without the quotes). Confirming that the domains in the results for that search appear in Arabic characters both in the status bar when hovering over the links in the results page, and in the address bar after clicking through.
