Ah, it's domainFACTORY. Good job hiding themselves :(.
On the up-side, they have very nice and detailed instructions for TB3 and 3.1:
Go to http://www.df.eu/de/service/df-faq/e-mail/mail-programme/
and click on "Wie kann ich mit Thunderbird 3 mein E-Mail-Postfach abrufen?"
It's in German, though.

Config:
IMAP or POP3: sslmailpool.ispgateway.de, port 993/995 resp., normal SSL
SMTP: smtprelaypool.ispgateway.de, port 465, normal SSL
cleartext password
Username: TB3 instuctions don't mention it (because we detect it), but TB2 instructions say "email address".

Given the details they provide, I think they may be willing to work with us, too. I'll give them a call for a test account.

Summary: [config] Add ispgateway.de (Germany) → [config] Add df.eu / ispgateway.de (Hoster, Germany)
Changed ID to "df.eu", because that's the ISP's primary domain. ispgateway.de
is really just a technical domain. As seen above, it's important to have
"df.eu" in the config, to know who that is, and the <domain>ispgateway.de</> is
easy to find.

I have constructive contact with df staff. They gave me access to a test
account. I tested with that and my config, and it works like a charm.

(Only nit: You cannot login with alias email addresses as IMAP username, but
you can log in with the main email address as IMAP username.)

So, config is verified.
