596280 - PDF attachment not showing in attachment pane (disappears when message is clicked)

When I am sent a PDF file, the message pane shows an attachment. When I click on the message, the attachment icon disappears, and the attachment is not visible anywhere in the message sent.

I can click on "Forward" and the file shows up in the attachments section, so I know there is an attachment there.

I am getting my mail by POP from Gmail - when I visit my Gmail account, the PDF attachment is visible in the email. I can usually double click on it there to see it.

This seems to only happen with PDF files. JPGs seem to come through fine.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Receive attachment in email.
2. Click on message.

Actual Results:  
Icon of attachment vanishes in message pane and no PDF attachment in body of message.

Expected Results:  
I expect to see the PDF attached and be able to double click to open it.

I use the default theme, I have few add-ons (spell check etc). Old PDF attachments I received before upgrading to Thunderbird 3 show up, it's just new messages that arrive.

This thing is driving me crazy.  My bank sent me a password protected pdf and the email shows no attachment icon.  I was mad at them and they wanted me to forward the email and I did.  They gave me a screen shot in their outlook which shows an attachment.  Also, if I tried opening an attchment (pdf password protected) it simply doesnt do anything and the attachment icon is gone from that email.  Help....

If anyone can reproduce this problem, please attach an example message (saved as .eml format, or by "view source") or get in touch with a mail developer to forward the message, if you'd rather not attach it to Bugzilla. Without the details about the internal structure of the message there's no way for us to diagnose.

We have several reports with same problem:
This bug 596280, Bug 673488, Bug 695042, Bug 741788, Bug 744340.
They should be consolidated if possible and the issue confirmed.
