Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.6) Gecko/20100625 Firefox/3.6.6
Build Identifier: Firefox 3.0.10
On previous versions of Firefox, an asterisk marked each new message until either it was read or the program was closed and restarted. Now, as soon as I read any *one* of the new messages, *all* of the asterisks disappear, so it's hard to keep track now of which messages are new vs. merely unread -- often an important distinction. Please reinstate the ability to keep messages as new.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Download new messages.
2. Open any one of the new messages.
3.
Actual Results:
All of the asterisks denoting new messages disappeared.
Expected Results:
Only the asterisk marking the mail actually opened should disappear.

When you say "open the new message", do you mean you select it and read it in the 3-pane ui, or are you opening the message in it's own window or tab?
I see this bug 100% of the time as well. TBird 3.1.6. Windows XP SP3.
It started in version 3 something. Sorry, I don't recall when exactly.
1. Read a new message in a new window or tab. As long as the new message window or tab is still open, the new unread asterisks are shown properly in the main TBird window for other new unread messages.
2. Close the message window or tab. All the new unread asterisks disappear for that newsgroup.
This happens in newsgroups and email inbox.

David,
It happens when I open a message in a new window or tab.

yes, we're treating closing the message window or tab the same as leaving the folder in the 3-pane ui - we shouldn't do that.

Yes. In fact, it would be great if the asterisks didn't disappear even when you leave the folder. Sometimes you don't handle all your mail in one folder all at once before moving on to the next folder. But that's a minor point compared to the window/tab bug.
