User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100722 Firefox/3.6.8 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.9) Gecko/20100825 Thunderbird/3.1.3 TB 3.1.3, Windows XP, IMAP Mailbox. Start TB; new messages in Inbox are marked with the new mail star - very useful. However, when a mail message (any message from the Inbox) is opened in a new window, and then closed (mouse click or Alt-F4), the new mail star is removed from all the new messages. This is new to TB 3, and quite disturbing - I've grown fond of these stars, they help manage a large queue of incoming messages in an even larger Inbox. BTW, the same thing happens when you click "Get Mail" - all stars are reset prior to the send/receive action - but that latter behavior was there in all previous TB versions. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Open Inbox, with new messages. Stars appear on new messages. 2.Open any message (not neci'ly one of the new ones) in a new window. 3.Close the new message window (say, with Alt-F4). Actual Results: In the mailbox display, all new mail stars are reset. Expected Results: New mail stars need to stay put.
Can you try in -safe-mode (http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode)? What version did this started with ?

> Can you try in -safe-mode Sure. Same behavior. > What version did this started with ? (Limited granularity answer:) Somewhere between the latest 2.x and 3.1.2 (this was my upgrade path). Can't tell if 3.0 already had this.
this is a feature that worked in 2.x doesn't work in 3.1.7 (which i just installed over 2.x) The new mail stars in each folder's message list should last as long as the folder name stays purple (or dark blue, whatever it is), the new (in version 3.x versus 2.x) new mail indicator in the folder tree pane. By the way, my filter rules sort incoming (new) mail messages into a variety of folders before I see them. a new mail indicator in the folder tree pane tells the user to look in the indicated folder to see new mail. in the list of messages in that folder, the stars tell the user which messages are newly arrived (they're not always those with the most recent date/time). please solve the case of the disappearing new mail stars! :-) d
Oh, sorry. Just noticed that the purple color of the name of the folder with new mail in it (in the folder pane) goes away too quickly too. (as soon as you click on a message line in the message list pane) There is a also tiny little star on the upper right corner of the folder's icon in the folder tree pane -- it also indicates new mail, and stays a little longer. The tiny star stays there when you click on message lines in the message list but disappears when you open one of the new messages. It should stay like the much more visible star stayed in TB2.
This is still a problem -- with TBird 6! Perhaps if there were an option to not use tabs, the new mail stars would magically become as persistent as they used to be? It would be better if the new mail stars for each message were made MORE persistent than they used to be, staying "on" until the message is opened or the entire TBird session is ended (by "Exit"ing the program).

The new mail (new message) stars disappear for an entire folder when you close any message that had been opened from that folder, even one that had been opened BEFORE the new messages arrived.
Problem still there - now at TB 9.0.1.
Michael, protz, or ludo, can you reproduce? I was not successful. But it wouldn't surprise me if Doron is on to something
I don't see this problem (using Version,12.0a2,User Agent,Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:12.0a2) Gecko/20120212 Thunderbird/12.0a2). Opening a new message in new window or new tab only marks that message as read, not all others (for me). I have used this feature quite a bit, and have never seen this behavior. Have you tried closing all Tbird, renaming the Thunderbird folder to a new name, then restart with a clean profile and see if you have some kind of profile corruption from upgrades causing this? I've had to restart my profiles a couple of times over the years as weirdness creeps in from various versions.
+Michael Baffoni - just to clarify, this bug does not address the "marking of a message as read". Indeed, the other messages stay in *unread* status even after the "reproduce" sequence. The bug is about the asterisk, that shows up to the left of the subject line of messages just arrived. This one, is removed from that subject line once another message is read, as described. Again, this is just to clarify.
Thanks for the clarification, I missed that.
I see this behavior - the icons only show up on auto-check of new email, it never happens if you "get messages" (see below). Any window close, any tab close, and any "get message" action clears the icon, but not the "read" status. This the way I have always recalled it working (even back to Seamonkey days), is this not intended behavior? I've always gotten around this by sorting by order received to see "new" new messages.
Just a reminder - TB 12.0, same behavior (obviously). +Michael Baffoni - note that I opened this bug when V3 came in; this was not the behavior prior to it. The "old" behavior (and, I believe, more useful one) was that these stars disappeared only if (a) TB was restarted or (b) "get mail" was pushed, which would reset all of them. This (1) makes sense and (2) is useful. With the current behavior, I'm not sure how useful these stars are at all - since they go away almost immediately (i.e. after you read the 1st item).
I've seen this, so confirming. But it also unpredictable. And might be a duplicate
