Build: 2000112320, Mac OS 9.0 To reproduce: * Install Mozilla. * Create a new profile, and start Navigator. What you should see: * <http://www.mozilla.org/>, as this is the home page specified in your prefs. What you actually see: * <http://www.mozilla.org/mozorg.html>. I guess this behavior is intentional, but that doesn't make it right. Showing a different page on first startup may be useful in commercial distributions, but it is not at all useful in the mozilla.org distribution. And <http://mozilla.org/mozorg.html> sucks even more than <http://mozilla.org/>, so I don't think we're doing beginning users any favors by increasing the likelihood of confusion about what their home page actually is.
yeah, i noticed this with 2000.11.27.08 [linux mozilla], but with an existing [migrated] profile. unfortunately, that's on my home machine --and i cannot remember offhand if i had 'last page viewed' or 'home page' selected for my startup page. am guessing the latter, but... anyhow. Asa/Blake, d'you know if there has been recent change [perhaps in a file other than navigator.properties] that would cause this? it's odd, because this didn't always happen on mozilla [iirc!].

I don't think it's a recent change, as it's been happening on Mozilla for many months (IIRC).
I've been seeing a slightly different beahvior on mac and linux commercial builds the past couple of days. when launching the browser the location field shows the URL of Home in Preferences but it does not load into the browser window. Hitting reload or the home button then loads the page. This functionality is not required on the smoketests, but it makes sense that the Home page a user selects opens upon first starting up the browser.
Tracy - I think what you are seeing should be a different bug than this one. This bug, it seems, talks about loading a different start page than the default for Mozilla (which doesn't apply to commercial builds). What you are seeing sounds like there isn't any home page that is loading when the product first starts.

I think that it is extremely useful to have a different start-up page (only seen on first launch after install) from the Home page. For example, I would like to see that page set to the release notes for Milestone builds (since we have a lot of first time users with Milestones). I disagree that it is not at all useful for the mozilla.org 'distribution'. It is precisely useful for an open source reference build where users are expected to be more advanced. Perhaps the arguement could be made that it should be different for commercail distributions where the audience is _expected_ to be easily confused by the incongruity. I think of this feature as something similar to the Debug and QA menus, as something kind of ugly and hackish but extremely useful to the mozilla.org audience. Let the commercial distributions of the world set the start up page and the home page to the same thing if they want to avoid confusing the easily confused but I don't think that we should take away something that is useful to a more sophisticated audience.
i agree w/ asa, however i think we should make sure milestones go to the relnotes page. do we a have a bug/faq describing the steps we need to take to make a release branch?

In light of Asa, Timeless comments, shd we mark this bug as WONTFIX. I think that the desired behaviour is to go to a "special" page the first time you startup.
I concur that this should be marked WONTFIX.
No other browser I've seen ignores the user's prefs like this. MSIE for Windows doesn't. Opera doesn't. MSIE for Mac doesn't. iCab doesn't. Why is Mozilla so special?

This is a feature that I will try very hard to hold on to. mpt, if you don't like this you are free to build yourself and set the start page to the same as the home page. Any other distribution is free to do the same. Maybe Beonex has a pref that you'd prefer. This is useful in the "mozilla.org distribution" which is aimed squarely at people interested in Mozilla testing and development. "No other browser I've seen ignores the user's prefs like this." The user doesn't have any prefs in a new profile. This isn't ignoring anything a user has set. This happens once when you first install the product. It is extremely useful. I should see about changing that first start page to www.mozilla.org/binaries-are-for-testing-and-development-purposes-here-is-how-you-can-get-involved.html

I don't mind it coming up with a special page once upon first launch, but I am annoyed greately by the Netscape page that is choosen for that, which 'permanently' resizes my browser window after I've carefully positioned and sized where I want my browser on lunch, with no way for me to stop this behavoir. It makes me much less willing to try a new upgrade. Hopefully either that page can be made to stop doing that, or a different page chosen as the first time one. (Hmm, maybe if I turn off JavaScript before upgrading...)
Jamie, it's only a Netscape page because you've shared a profile between Netscape and Mozilla. Taking this bug to resolve it as won't fix.

Asa, okay thanks. Though it was bringing up the Netscape page each time I install the Mozilla nightly builds. Shouldn't it revert to a Mozilla one time page when installing a Mozilla build? That or where do I rip out that Netscape URL. *grin* (Btw, turning off Javascript before upgrading did keep it from resizing/moving the window at least.)
Ah, never mind. Looks like someone fixed that too. Did a new install and not going to the Netscape page anymore. Thanks.
