provide context menu item and/or shortcut such that selected message OR header text can be filtered on after selection ... without clicking copy, moving mouse, clicking in filter or search field, and then pasting - make the dumb computer do it :)

Do you have any proposal in which context menu this should be? The selected text should then be copied to the quick filter field? Or where? You mention two fields (filter and search), how should it work? Where does the user decide that?
