closing tab with esc

People
(Reporter: kawahh, Unassigned)
Details
(Keywords: uiwanted)
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:5.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/5.0
Build ID: 20110615151330
Steps to reproduce:
My User expectation when I double click first on an email the tab opens. This is good and i can read the email within this new tab-page.
Then i would like to go back to the list and pressing ESC.
Nothing happens..
This is not the behaviour someone wanted if he is used to read email.
Tab has a different usage in an email programm like thunderbird
and should be treated differently in the kind that
by pressing the ESC keyboard this tab should be closed and the focus should go back to the point where someone has doubleclicked or pressed ENTER on an email list entry.
In a nutshell: Closing the TAB in thunderbird should be done by ESC and please set this up.
Actual results:
nothing happened. this is not setup as expected it should be.
Expected results:
the tab with the opened email should be closed by pressing ESC
and the focus should go back to the previous email list with the email marked.

I would surely hope that it will never do that. Tabs in Firefox can't be closed with an esc either.

Did i understand this right, that you mark this as a doublicate of another bug
but this bug is closed and therefore no one cares?
This is not correct, as i see clearly the need to have such a consitent keyboard usage of the thunderbird..
please open this again or the other one.!

While you may disagree with the conclusion of bug 543365, that doesn't change the fact that this is a duplicate of it.

bug 543365 was closed as Wontfix, the reasons are in the bug. developers have decided this is not something they want in thunderbird. You can always build an extension...
Comment 6•14 years ago
|
||
The decision "the developers" have been done is poor.
An extension is not a good concept of a consistent and good user interface.
this is clearly a bug and remains one.
As i cannot reopen this issue bug 543365 and change the status
we have to keep on this new one.

Please stop unmarking this as a duplicate. a decision has been reached by the developers. You can argue it out in the news groups, bug not here.

An error in the user interface is an error..
and remains an error..
i don't know who is the developer and how to join any discussion group
as the dublicate is definititly closed this is and remains a BUG
and therefore this is a new bug.
Please do not close this anymore
it is anoying.

Karlo: The decision is in bug 543365. If we were to change the decision we would re-open that bug and not this one - but we would not re-open it until our minds were changed.
I will ask our user experience person to re-look at that bug, but you must realise that what you consider an error is not necessarily an error to everyone, and we may not change our minds for the points already explained in that bug, especially when an alternately shortcut (ctrl-W) is already available, and escape does something different.
Additionally, there is an add-on that is already available that you can install to have this functionality if you really want it:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/close-tab-on-esc/
This bug is a duplicate of that bug and must remain so for proper tracking.
Please do not re-open again and respect our bug tracking.

Mark:
i realize that my expectation of a user experience may differ from your and others, agreed. I am a heavily mail user, you may not!
I see this as a usual result of missing user experience & usability document.
I do realize that other shortcuts are avialable and i do also see the point that a addon is in place for this and i alrealy use this.
Nevertheless, just give me the link to join the forum & group or hidden team of this "we" to contribute to some more user friendlyness. At least we can see that user friendlyness is not a issue with this kind of "we" we talking here. I suppose you are talk just as a "we" yourself and no one else.
the user experience & usability matrix/document/principle is a design document which should give a constistent user interface and proven good usability for the purpose of the product. If someone within the dev team is arguing that in the browser no one will like to have this kind of function - agreed, but even more this kind of argument proves that someone does not have understood the difference of an emailclient and a browser!
I would be happy to change the status to something like "needs a recheck, re-discussion" but not closed as the other track 543365 is closed forever.
Please do not close this again and again and at least do what you promise first - to ask your guy of usability.

Karlo, if you reopen this bug again I'll have to request your account be disabled. Bug 543365 is not dead, it can be reopened if needed. BMO needs to track how many of the same bug reports have been filed. It is not saying that is not being discussed, it is not saying we are ignoring it. In fact, bugs with lots of dupes are often reopened and re-examined Mark said he would contact the UX people, he may have done it using Email, IRC, in person, etc. That does not change the fact that this bug is a duplicate.
As for the newsgroups, a simple search for Mozilla Newsgroups yields http://www.mozilla.org/about/forums/ as the first result. I would try the mozilla.dev.apps.thunderbird group.
Again, Do Not reopen this bug again please. bug 543365 is not closed forever. You cannot reopen it because you do not have the editbugs privileges. However, for someone who oes, it can be opened again.
