Steps to reproduce:

This has happened in TB3 and also now in TB5. I have an email in my folder (doesn't seem to matter which folder), and when I double click on it to open it, it brings up another email entirely. No matter what I do, I cannot see the original email. If I reply to it (without opening it), then I see the original email but it's blank.

Actual results:

I try to open an email and it brings up another email. The email that is brought up is usually one that has lots of html in it, including using stationery, but the html email has been deleted already (and trash emptied and both the mail folder and trash compacted). It's as if there's a mixup between the table of contents of the mailbox and the emails. It happens occasionally, perhaps once a week or every two weeks, but regularly.

Expected results:

Bring up the email listed.

I can't attach more than one pic so if you need them let me know. I've attached a pdf of the pics. I do notice that it shows UTF-8 for the replied message but not sure what that means???
Sorry -- I made a pdf so there is no issue of more than one pic. Can't seem to edit.
One more addition: I say the email brought up has lots of html -- it doesn't now, but the original email with that subject from that person DID have lots of html and graphics.
Does rebuilding the index of the folder where you open the email helps ?
I have had this happen as well across many versions of TB. Sometimes it shows part of the source of the message instead of the message, other times it shows an incorrect message.

Rebuilding the index has worked for me.

See also bugs 481799, 563182, 533316 which all seem to indicate the same/similar problem.
Tommy, thanks for poiting similar bugs. I opened meta bug 714489 for ease of analysis of such similar bugs.
I've been seeing this bug quite a bit for many months now. Yesterday I saw it again,
  Thunderbird v13.0.1
  Ubuntu 12.04 Precise
  offline-use=on
  IMAP
  Mail service: Gmail
  Folder: Inbox

I attached a screenshot and the *.eml file. The *.eml file shows the correct message. The message is in thread pane is the one at 8:52am. I went into gmail via a web browser, and confirmed that the message being displayed is the one 3 above at 7:22am.

I tried compacting the folder. While the compact was running. I double-clicked the message in the thread pane, which caused it to open up the correct message in another tab, and it also then updated to show the correct message in the message pane.

For the next time I see it:
How do I find the UID of a message?
Where do I find the Thunderbird log(s)?

Please let me know what other information to capture next time to help in resolving this bug. This is really unnerving, causing me to wonder if I ever delete what I think is message A but it in fact deletes message B.

In hopes of avoiding this issue, I have now set all my folders to offline=off and have disabled archiving. Anything else to try?
Note that the message in this file is the one highlighted in the thread pane. But the message being displayed in the message pane is different.
Looks like you need to fix this. I have the same problem with v 15.0. Why has this not been fixed. Very irritating. I don't remember having it in last version.
Do you still see this problem when using version 17 or newer?
Newer can be found at http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/channel/
