Details

Mozilla /5.0 (Android;Linux armv7l;rv:8.0a1) Gecko/20110815 Firefox/8.0a1 Fennec/8.0a1
Device: LG Optimus 2X

Steps to reproduce:
1. Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla
2. long tap next to "Mozilla"

Expected result:
Nothing should happen.

Note: this is reproducible also on Firefox 7 beta 1
Actual result:
"Mozilla" text is selected, please see video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOGm7LSONTs&feature=channel_video_title
I think this is expected, the code is finding the word closest to where the user has tapped.

Ok, the stock Android browser only shows the text selection UI when you long tap on text, not when you long tap in empty areas.
So this is not an invalid bug, we should decide if we want the same behavior.

Mark, what do you think?

This could make bug 688262 less easily occuring, btw.
...and it could prevent bug 685058. Assigning to myself, but please ping me if someone else wants to work on this. I won't get to it right away.

I was hoping the CSS3 API would help here, but it's backed out now too. We could try using the elementsFromRect API and see what comes back.
