In the menu go to Insert->Image..., choose animated GIF via "Choose file" button, and insert some Alt text; notice that GIF is shown correctly on the bottom of the "Image Properties" dialog window 3. Actual Results: Animated GIFs are not displayed in the Compose window Expected Results: All images should be displayed correctly as in Netscape 4.x.

what happens if you do this in editor? (I'm guessing we do the same thing). akkanna, is this by design?
No HTML editor that I've ever used shows animated gifs (Netscape 4.7x didn't, FrontPage 98/2000 doesn't and I'm pretty sure Dreamweaver doesn't, either).

The editor intentionally calls the imglib API to stop image animation. As to the first frame briefly being shown, then changing to the alt tag, that's something imglib is doing; I'm not sure if it's intentional (my guess is no) and it's mentioned in bug 65016 (sometimes stopping the animation also results in a crash, apparently a race condition involving the image load being cancelled but not cleaned up properly). I'm hoping that when that bug is fixed, animated images will display their first frames (or at least as much of the first frame as was loaded before we discovered it was an animated image).

Please try it in Messenger of Netscape 4.x on any platform (I tried on NT in Netscape 4.7 and Solaris 2.7 in Netscape 4.61) - it works fine.
Tested in Windows 2000, Mozilla Build 2001041004. Bug DID NOT occur. I was able to attach an animated GIF and send successfully without the image being replaced by the text.

I am fairly certain that this is a dup of bug 73328 which has already been fixed, explaining why the symptoms are gone.
Testing with a day old CVS build, Linux: Animated gif inserts and remains (unanimated) in html mailcompose. WFM.
