Iiuc, VC8x64/Win64 succeeds for you.
Is VC8x64 a different software from VC8(EE)?
If yes, how could we detect the difference?

The article reads "256MB is the size limitation for the ILK file in VS2005.", but is not explicit about Win64 :-|
