Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0
Build ID: 20111104165243
Steps to reproduce:
Double click attachment in the pane at the bottom of the message
Actual results:
The file opened but not before saving a copy of it to the Desktop
Expected results:
1. The file should have opened without needing to save a second copy. All attachments are already in a local folder in the Thunderbird directory structure, creating a copy before opening is pointless and annoying.
2. Thunderbird should have prompted me where to save the file as that is the option I have set in the preferences. Instead of prompting, it saved it to the default location that was last selected, despite being disabled.

What type of attachment is this? Did you configure that type to be opened by Thunderbird? Check: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Actions_for_attachment_file_types
The information on that page appears to be outdated as it is not accurate to the current version. It is also irrelevant to the described behavior. The file type does not matter (i.e. occurs with all types, regardless of handler actions), the issue is the improper saving of a second copy for no reason, and bypassing the settings chosen.

I don't get this behavior when trying to open an attachment. I have a PDF file attached to an e-mail, I assigned it to be opened with okular (a PDF reader for KDE), and it opens when I double-click the attachment. The configuration is done through Thunderbird preferences -> Attachments.
