I just opened a new window, which contain a new tab but the new tab in that window did not use the new tab page.

At that point I discovered I'd already grown to expect the new tab links to be available.
Depends on: 455553
Not sure what the behavior should be. Should we display about:home or the 'new tab page'? Asking UX for input.

New Windows are generally opened when a user has a new set of tasks. Showing the New Tab page will make it easier for the user to work on the new task. Showing the about:home page isn't very useful as it just contains a search box which is anyways also accessible from the nav-bar.

So about:home is always be redundant to you, isn't it? You're free to set your home page to about:newtab, fwiw.
I second this feature request. I can't come up with any plausible reason why the new tab page is only shown on tabs that are opened after FF has started and not on the first tab that opens at start up time.

It seems a bit weird in my opinion to always have open a new tab after starting FF, then close the first one with which it started and then click on one of the page samples of frequently visited sites to start using FF.
I resolved the issue by going to Tools -> Options -> General and then setting the value of "When Firefox starts" to "Show my home page" and the value of "Home Page:" to "about:newtab", but consider this to be a workaround rather than a permanent solution since without making this change to the configuration I consider the start-up behaviour to be inconsistent.
Any news on this?

The current blank page when opening a new window is not all that useful.

Intended behavior is to show new tab on new windows. The blocker here is in adding the snippet to pages which right now show about:home - namely, new windows and when Firefox opens.

Mass-move to Firefox::New Tab Page.

The code looks OK to me, but I'd like to hear from UX, or at least not surprise them with this change. The only UX input to this bug was Boriss over two years ago, and she hasn't worked on Firefox for a while now.

Stephen, Philipp, should new windows use about:newtab as their start pages? They currently use about:home. Boriss commented over two years ago about it, but I want to be sure that's still UX's thinking:

Yes, that is still the intent!
I'm assuming that this won't affect the first window opened (when Firefox starts up). If it does, then there are some questions we need to resolve with BD and the snippets team first.

This patch also affects the first window.
Getting snippets on the new tab page blocks the ultimate goal of having one start page. I think that applies here as well. In other words I don't think we should do this until we solve that.
