Windows 8 is not yet supported and there is no blocklist for old graphics drivers while there is one on Windows 7 and below. You should indeed disable manually HW acceleration in the Options window or update your graphics driver: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-upgrade-my-graphics-drivers Usually, there's a Firefox crash with the driver crash. Can you provide the crash ID from about:crashes?
