I have a bookmarks folder with 31 toplevel folders and two toplevel bookmarks.
Inside one of those toplevel folders are six child folders.
Inside one of those child folders are 36 bookmarks.
By coincidence or otherwise, this happens to open just above the
differently-abled "Imported IE Favorites" folder (wtf is this doing here, I
didn't request it nor do I want or trust anything labeled "IE" in my browser, I
assure you!)
Not repeatably, but very often, when this child folder is opened, used, and
closed, the surrounding sibling folders and the immediate parent folder are
displayed, but the rest of the bookmarks sidebar display goes empty.
By shutting and reopening the sidebar to force a refresh, this is often, but not
always, capable of being worked around. Sometimes it gets completely wedged and
the only recourse that sets it right is to exit and relaunch Mozilla.
Windows 98b, fresh Mozilla launch seems less likely to display error.

More info: I've managed to have the entire display disappear a couple of times
by now.
Sliding the bookmarks window right slider widget thumbtab up and down finds
nothing, or the previously reported situation, but _clicking_ the up or down
arrows restores the display, so there is a workaround if the user stumbles upon it.

I see this on w2k 2001062004.
an easy way to duplicate it is in the history window.
1) spend all day browsing lots of sites and lots of pages in each site.
2) open History sidebar.
3) open a site moderately far down todays list.
4) click on a bunch of entries, reload a couple of pages, browse.
5) scroll history sidebar.
(repeat 4 and 5 as necessary)

Resummarizing.
See Bug 85723 for same issue, different steps in Manage Bookmarks.
Bookmarksliner should fix this issue (it did for History).
Summary: closing large folder in sidebar bookmarks menu sometimes leaves display pied → closing large folder in sidebar bookmarks menu sometimes makes folders disappear
