Sometime in last 10 days it looks like the option to choose ANY Trash folder disappeared, and it now has to be in the same account. I'm not sure for the logic for the change, but there are good reasons for Trash to go to Local Folders/Trash because it reduces your server side storage, and also seems to be quicker (maybe its saving an upload back to that folder? Account Settings -> Server Settings -> When I delete move it to ...
Component: General → Account Manager
Summary: Trash can no longer go to a Local folder → [IMAP] Trash can no longer go to a Local folder
Mitra, anything in error console? Can you narrow it please to a specific one day range of builds so we have the regression range? aceman, I wouldn't think that any of your recent changes would have hit TB16 - is that incorrect?
true enough - i forgot you are so prolific :) Mitra, if any are related to your issue I would think it would be one of bug 485839, bug 763236, bug 768779
I don't think any of those are relevant.
I could not find a case in the past where I was able to choose anything other than a subfolder of the IMAP Inbox to choose as the destination for a deleted message. I tried current release, also TB 10 ESR. Can you give clear steps to "success" for an older version so that I can see a working version? Maybe it depends on some characteristic of the IMAP server?
Kent - maybe you are correct, I've looked harder ... The Trash in Local Folders has mail in it up to 15-aug, then it stops. But I might have misidentified the cause. All that mail looks like Junk, and Junk is in Local Folders. OK - my mistake - this is all Trash generated by expired Junk, which is why it stops 14 days ago (the time on my Automatic Junk Deletion.) I'm trying to minimise disk traffic - does sending it to Trash cause the message to be re-ploaded? If so then allowing for a local Trash folder could be a Feature Request ?
Do you still see this when using a current version?

(In reply to Mitra Ardron from comment #6) > If so then allowing for a local Trash folder could be a Feature Request ? Yes. (1) current > POP3/Local Folders : There is no way to chane trash oter than "Trash". > IMAP : "Mbox name for trash" can be set in mail.server.server81.trash_folder_name, > (string. different from Copies&Folders, Junk Settings.) (2) To resolve problems relevant to "trash selection in IMAP" such as bug 480393, bug 491424, UI like Copies&Folders/Junk Settings was considered, but it's still undecided. See also bug 533140 and bug 800035. (3) If "trash selection UI in IMAP" will be changed(setter of trash_folder_name like one in prefs.js), code who processes the setting and code who moves mail to requested folder should be changed, and I guess it'll be not so small change. A possible workaround: (a) Use "move from IMAP folder to local mail folder" insead of "Delete". (b) Use "Archive" as your "Delete", with "Archives == local mail folder". Anyway, please change to Enhancement, because "Trash can not go to a Local folder" is current design/implementation if IMAP, and please remove "no longer" part from bug summary to avoid misleading/confusion, because it's wrong.

Blank comment to clear needinfo request (sorry taking hte action requested didn't seem to clear it).

FYI. I've opened bug 836631 and requested solution of "Copies&Folders/Junk Settings like folder specification in trash_folder_name of prefs.js" for problem of bug 480393 and bug 491424. If such change will be done, and if "trash selection UI" and "trash folder access logic" will support mailbox:// URL(local mail folder) in addition to imap:// URL(IMAP folder), local mail folder can be used as Tb's trash for IMAP account, as done in current Copies&Folders and Junk Settings.
Please fix this, I always get quota issues when setting up IMAP accounts, there should just be a simple tickbox "use local trash" and that's it! thx for reading, p.
BTW: why is this "UNCONFIRMED"? I hereby honestly confirm that I am affected by a nuisance caused by the bug described above ...
Sorry, we can confirm this as an enhancement request. In addition to WADA's workarounds, it is also possible to tag messages to be deleted with a new tag and create a filter that moves those messages to local trash. The filter would be run manually at some proper time (e.g. weekly).

thx for the update! Yes, I know about the workaround, but I have to fix a lot of different email accounts for customers, cleaning up, renaming folders and stuff, doing that on Ubuntu. Using the trash of the respective IMAP accounts is not the way to go and the workarounds are a bit clumsy at best - sometimes simply don't work for example if you use addons like "remove duplicate mail" that always assume there is a proper trash location defined ... But thx for reacting and maybe there is a fix soon, it doesn't sound that hard to do. keep on going, thx, piedro
