User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux i686; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0 Build ID: 20121011002034 Steps to reproduce: At "View → Sort by → Grouped By Sort" I activated the grouping of my mails by the sort method "Date" (so I get groupings like "Today", "Yesterday", "Last Week", …). I open the folder. All groups are folded. I double-click at the group heading "Yesterday". Actual results: All mails grouped in "Yesterday" get opened in tabs. All these mails are know marked as read and it takes some time to close them again (some groups might hold several thousand mails). Expected results: The group "Yesterday" should have been unfolded. If you want to unfold a group, you have to (single-)click at the little plus/arrow icon to the left of the heading. I think double-clicking at the heading itself should (un)fold the group, too; it's natural behaviour known from other application. I guess opening all mails in a group is a much rarer use case, so it would be enough to do "hide" it in the context menu. I asked for a solution at <http://superuser.com/questions/488236/dont-open-all-mails-when-double-clicking-at-sorted-group-headings>, but got no answer yet.
You can try the hidden pref: mail.operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads
Component: Untriaged → Folder and Message Lists
OS: Linux → All
Thanks, Joe. I set "mail.operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads" to false. Now the double-click doesn't open all mails. But it still doesn't unfold the group. Is there a documentation for this setting? What else does it cause? When searching for it I found an issue that might be a duplicate: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=531009
It also eliminates the message summary in the preview pane, which probably should be a standalone feature separate from the "open all in tabs" function. We should probably dup this bug to bug 531009
