see bug 758624 - i take over the iX infra testing project and was asked to test linux on this systems. For the Linux distro: Fedora is fine if it comes to it, but if we can switch to Mint or Ubuntu, I think that's better. Would be great if you guys can setup that system and let me know the login details so i can test it out etc
The last conversation we (coop and I) had about linux testers was to use CentOS 6, just as we do on the builders because that was the path of least resistance since it would require minimal puppet work (the work for the builders is already done). If you want to choose an OS that does not use kickstart and/or is not CentOS, you will be starting from scratch with a vanilla install and you will need to determine what packages need to be added and implement all of that though puppet configuration work. If you do not want a vanilla install of CentOS 6.2, please specify what OS you do want, and we can provide a vanilla install of that to get you started (we will use the same credentials that releng uses for all other slaves).

Hey Amy, thanks! talked with guys in Releng. Can you setup the maschine with ubuntu (i guess Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS is fine). cheers, - Tomcat

We might be able to get to this this week (it requires a completely new kickstart config and all of the Ubuntu software on our end), but if not, it will likely be a few weeks between b2g and people being out of the office.

For other relops folks in case someone else starts to look at this... I'm starting to set up a ks env for ubuntu on admin1a.private.releng.scl3.mozilla.com. I talked to digi who said that aj has taken over cobbler. Aj says we're not actually using cobbler for much. So I don't know how this impacts the releng kickstart server in scl3. Dustin, did you have to do anything for the seamicros? I see there's a different file in there for them. To date: I've snagged the ubuntu-12.04.1-alternate-i386.iso file and rsynced it over to /var/www/cobbler/ks_mirror/ubuntu-12.04.1-i386. I've also copied /var/www/cobbler/ks_mirror/ubuntu-12.04.1-i386/install/{vmlinuz,initrd.gz} to /tftpboot/images/ubuntu-12.04.1-i386. I've copied over a basic menu entry form mvadm01:/tftpboot/linux-install/pxelinux.cfg/default, but it'll still need a good bit of tweaking. Also don't have a basic kickstart config to work from, since we did live installs. Might just start with that and then use the subsequently generated ks.cfg file.

retasking ix-mn-w832-002 for this purpose.

cc-ing Rail here because he's setting up an Ubuntu image in AWS for linux unittests that will hopefully be a subset of this eventual config.
I've copied all of the work from comment 5 over to admin1b, as well so that both admin servers have the image, pxeconfig, and default kickstart file (which I generated from a by-hand install). Right now kickstarting a machine from our internal kickstart mirrors is blocked on getting flows open, but I've gone ahead and done an interactive install using the main ubuntu US mirror to get you started. I've set up a very basic system that has core ubuntu plus openssh, nothing more. root on ix-mn-linux64-001.test.releng.scl3.mozilla.com has the releng kickstart root password. note for relops, again we lose the IPMI GUI when these boot up, so we'll want to configure the cli console on them as well.

Thanks for moving this forward, Amy.

Really great Amy to move that forward, will hammer on that system when i'm back from the holidays vacation

Amy's got a starting point for a KS config at modules/cobbler/templates/kickstart/profiles/Ubuntu-12.04.1-i386-talos.cfg.erb So this needs: * kickstart finished * puppetize.sh modified and installed by the KS script * rail's puppet configs for Ubuntu (bug 820238)
I've moved the KS/puppetization stuff to bug 829134. I think this bug is done - the host is up and ready for tomcat (or rail?) to play with.
