User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:17.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/17.0
Build ID: 20121128204232

Steps to reproduce:

Started up Thunderbird

Actual results:

It locked up completely for several minutes, used a rediculous amount of RAM, and 25% of my CPU.

I've got several chat accounts and one email account. Turning off "sync on startup" for the email account does help, but it still locks up for 15 seconds. I've got a core i5 with 8gb of ram, so I don't think it's that. I use an encrypted folder, in case that's part of it.

This was never a problem when I was on Thunderbird 3.

Expected results:

It should have started instantly and been ready for basic input.

Summary: Thunderbird 15+ Absolutely Unusuable Due To Startup Performance Issues → Thunderbird 15+ Unusuable after Startup - high memory
When starting in thunderbird safe mode, the performance is way better (2s startup?)! I then tried restarting in regular mode but with chats disabled - still pretty good (3s?). Finally I deleted Facebook Chat and enabled the other two - still 3s.

Apparently facebook chat is the big problem - could be the number of online friends compared with other protocols as well.

The RAM was at 750MB with no emails or tabs open.
even 750MB is high. was that with facebook chat enabled and the other chats removed?

- how many contacts do you have in your address books?
- what happens if you add back facebook chat?
- and, what were the other chat accounts?

Summary: Thunderbird 15+ Unusuable after Startup - high memory → Thunderbird 15+ Unusable after Startup, high memory, with facebook chat account
I have 290 gmail contacts, 5 collected addresses. In Facebook, I have ~650 offline and ~20 online.

750 was with all chats enabled at startup. The other protocols are AIM and gchat. I'm using Additional Chat Protocols for Thunderbird 2.10.4.

If I enable facebook chat after startup it freezes for a decent while but not quite as long as on startup. Disconnecting then reconnecting again is faster than the first time.

It would be great if you could use the Gecko Profiler to send us a profile of the freeze.

The add-on is at https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/thunderbird/addon/gecko-profiler/

There are some explanations about how to us it at http://mikeconley.ca/blog/2012/06/15/gecko-profiler-now-works-in-thunderbird-daily/
