The little green flag that appears in the mail icon when new mail is present
doesn't go away once the new mail is read. To get it to go away, I have to
manually tell mozilla to get new messages again, at which point the icon disappears.
Please always include the Mozilla build ID in bug-reports.
This is dup of bug 68879, marked fixed..
Sorry. If I should always include the build id, why isn't there a field for it?
This is on 0.9.1.

reporter,
This problem was fixed with bug 68879. Can you give the buildid from the
navigator title bar please. Do you have pop or imap account? Do you have a
reproducible test case?

I dont think this is fixed. Using 2001060713 linux (0.9.1) and it happens. I
have used mozilla since may and all versions have had this bug. It does not
really annoy me, but it's a bug
Sorry for the egregious lack of information before. I don't know what I was
thinking. Part of this problem has gone away as a result of my creating a new
profile from scratch. Part remains and is described below.
The build ID is 2001060713. I have two IMAP mailboxes, though I don't think
that the number of mailboxes affects the bug. The test case used to be
reproducible, but it seems to be working more often now. I'm sure that when I
first started mozilla to try to give you a better test case, it exhibited this
behavior. Perhaps it only has the problem once or twice and then works correctly.
1. Open mail window
2. Click on INBOX, to show the summary of mesages.
3. Verify that there are no new messages, and that the green thingy is not in
the biff icon.
4. Leaving the window open with the INBOX summary visible, send a new message to
yourself.
5. Recieve the new message (this happens the next time mozilla checks for new
mail). This causes the INBOX title to become bold with a message count next to
it, the green thingy to appear in the biff icon, and a bold new message line in
the summary.
5. Click on the new message in the summary. The INBOX title turns to normal
type, and the message count disappears. The green thingy, however, is still in
the biff icon...hence, the bug.

Do you mean biff icon remains in the task bar on the mail icon?
It remains on the mail icon. I don't think support for a taskbar icon exists
yet for linux.

Task bar that I referred to is within the application not windows task bar.
I have the same build on my linux box RH 6.2, gnome-1.0.55. I tried doing the
test case you have below. The biff icon on top of the mail icon below in the
status bar gets cleared after reading the message.

I misread what you said before. I mean the mail icon in the taskbar.
I've run into this a few more times now, and it seems that this specifically
happens only the first time you go to read mail, after you've opened mail for
the first time after starting mozilla.

I created a new profile with 2 imap accounts. Composed a new mail and sent. Biff
retrieved the message and it cleared the biff arrow as soon as I read that
email. I have not seen the biff arrow not clearing even with the first time
starting the application. Still worksforme.

Steps to reproduce: classic theme
-I was browsing and got new mail. I read it, answered it, and even erased it.
Biff icon had the green arrow.
-After clicking on another mail folder (new mail was in inbox), the biff icon
updated status.

I can confirm. Always reproducible.
Build 2001112009 (0.9.6 branch) on Win98. One POP mail account set up. Check and
automatically download new messages set. Modern theme.
1. Send mail to yourself with Mail open but focus on browser window.
2. Maintain focus on browser window while waiting for mail to get
checked/downloaded.
3. Hear new mail sound (HAL saying "There's a message for you.") and see green
arrow on mail icon in status bar docked on lowere left of browser window.
4. Change focus to mail window.
5. Click on new message to "read" it.
6. Message/Folder unbolds, but green arrow is still there. "Loading document"
persists in status bar (Went away when focus changed to browser and back).
7. Green arrow persists even when switching focus among windows.
8. Focus on Mail window, "Get Messages" -> Green arrow goes away.
Note that, if focus is on Mail window when message arrives, green arrow DOES go
away when mail is read!

Yes, beautiful! This was the missing bit that is causing the bug: current focus
when mail arrives.

This now WORKSFORME properly. I believe it has been working properly for a
while, without any announcement that it was fixed. I am using 2002012304.

I can reproduce this bug the following way (using mozilla 0.9.9 id 2002031104 on
win98)
0. Have a pop-account createt in mozilla (or allready have one).
1. Crate a mailfilter on that pop-account that filters mail to a local folder
(other folders outside this pop-accounts folders will also do)
2. Send a mail to that pop account that gets filtered.
3. Go to you pop-account and hit 'Get Msgs'
4. After mail arrives go to the folder the mail lands in and read it.
5. The green arrow in the tray-icon remains as does the icon on your
pop-accounts main-folder.
6. To remove the icons click on any folder of the pop-account

This seems to be working for me lately (on the Mozilla1.0.1 branch builds).
Windows 2000.
Can anyone else confirm?

Stephend,
Actually using today's branch build I am still seeing this on win98. When you
filter a message to a local folder and let biff retrieve the message. Then go to
the local folder and select the message.
Result: Biff arrow does not clear on the mail icon on the LHS in both 3 pane
mail window and the browser window.

Still getting this bug (or a variant) in rv:1.3a (Gecko/20021212).
One the "new mail" icon appears in the system tray, it stays there until I close
and reopen Mozilla. Should go away once I have read mail.

I can still reproduce this bug the following way using
Mozilla 1.3 Windows xp Pro ServRel 1
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030312
Since I'm on a modem I'll wait for 1.4. beta to test again.

The original symptom, as described so precisely in comment 18, is no longer
present. There is no mail-filtering involved with that issue. I cannot find
any duplicate report of this bug (for that symptom).
The symptom described in comment 24 / comment 30 appears when filtering is
moving the new message around (and not marking it read). This symptom is
described in Bug 107206 comment 8; Bug 116181 is devoted to it. See also Bug
117861, which is devoted to one aspect of this particular symptom.
I am marking this WFM. Tilmann Kuhn, please read 116181, and if you think it
would be helpful, copy your precise description over there.
