apologies if this is an old or well-known issue, but i keep running into it...
basically, when i have an ftp link as a bookmark or toolbar button, i cannot
access it from the toolbar [ie, from the button or the bookmarks menu on the
toolbar]. instead i get a tiny, unexpanding box.
i have the pref in Debug > Networking > Enable html directory listing turned on
[checkbox selected]. however, rather than displaying the regular link icon in
the toolbar or bookmarks toolbar menu, it displays as a folder.
workaround #1: select the link from the Bookmarks menu in the main menu. kinda
defeats the purpose of having the link in the toolbar, though.
workaround #2: turn of the html dir view pref. even though the toolbar button
and bookmark work, i'm stuck with the long, expanding menus [which i'm not too
fond of --i much prefer the html view :)].
workaround #3: edit the ftp url so that its protocol is http instead. problem is
that this doesn't work with all ftp sites --eg, it's fine for the mozilla ftp
site, but doesn't work at all for sweetlou [alas].

Dupe of 80401. (the summary for that says the opposite of what is proposed in
that bug, though)

The root cause of this problem is that the ftp protocol is applying the stream
converter instead of the clients. A bug should be filed against me about this
(if there isn't already one.

dougt: I have a fix for that (bug 78148). Feel like reviewing it, and fixing the
problems it has? :)
But this feature is going away soon (even though my patches will let this work
with html dirs enabled), becasue it has other problems. Ben or I will get
arround to a patch soonish, hopefully.
se - if you leave off the final / in the ftp url, then we can't recognise it as
a directory, so you can use the ftp stuff anyway.
