There should be an icon for messages that has the status bit "replied" on. Many other mail programs do that and it helps saving screen estate by allowing to not need to have the "status" row activated. This is similar to the "unread" status, which is already shown visually.
Yeah, the icon should reflect the replied status.

I would also very much like to have this feature. Without I have to frequently go to the "sent" folder to see if I've replied to a message or not.
Yes, I very much agree. Activating the Status column and seeing the text "read" or "replied" uses some valuable real estate in the Mail program. Using just arrows (a green back arrow and a red forward arrow to indicate replied or forwarded) would help.
I'd like this as well. IMAP servers apparently support flags for Replied, Forwarded, etc.

YES! This is definitively very important for usability. it is just a 'me too' comment, but if it helps to show the developers that this is important... I still have to use mozilla on windows. but on linux I have switched to kmail, which has this feature. Still, mozilla is very good. can someone manage to put this on 1.4? Maybe it's to late, but I'd really like to have this feature.

I would say this is definitely a subset/dupe of Bug 43601, and in my opinion it should be resolved as such.
DOH! I meant to say that this bug should be resolved as a dupe of Bug 22112. Bug 43601 was filed against the back end to support the UI enhancement requested in Bug 22112.
