Build ID: 20130511120803
Steps to reproduce:
Check for new mail (using POP). TBird marks freshly-delivered mail arriving in the inbox with starbursts. Open any message listed in the inbox in a new tab, then close the message (close the tab the message is displayed in). The starbursts shown in the inbox list disappear.
Actual results:
The starbursts indicating freshly-delivered (freshly-retrieved?) mail disappear too early.
Expected results:
What is desired is for the (asterisk-shapted) starburst next to each freshly-delivered message in the listing of messages in a folder to disappear NOT when the user opens and closes a message in that folder, but instead >>>when the user leaves that folder<<< by choosing another folder in the folder navigation pane, or by exiting the program.

The new indicators are there until you've viewed the folder and will be gone when you come back. Unfortunately due to bug 487386 opening in tab will "refresh" the view :/
Summary: Starbursts beside freshly-delivered messages disappear too soon. → new indicator (Starbursts) beside freshly-delivered messages disappear after opening mail in tab

Ok it's only if one close the message too. So blaming bug 487386 was probably incorrect.
Summary: new indicator (Starbursts) beside freshly-delivered messages disappear after opening mail in tab → new indicator (Starbursts) beside freshly-delivered messages disappear after opening and closing mail in tab
