Thunderbird disables HWA by default. Since bug 907926 landed our message rendering is seriously affected Enabling HWA via the pref gfx.direct2d.disabled bypasses the problem, but may cause other problems. See the URL for a screenshot.
don't know what has happened to url above. Apologies. problem is that black areas appear on screen instead of bleed-through reported by Joe. These are temporary, random and vary in size from thin bar across bottom of screen to large block covering third of screen at bottom.

See some of the dependent bugs in bug 907926

Noted that messages opened in new tab or new window does not show the black areas.
Verified fixed in a local build by core backout: https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/rev/46406fd1787f Should be fine in tomorrow's nightly/Daily. Backout was done here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=908822#c7
