When bad domain name is entered (http://www.wrongdomainduh.com) we've got an
Alert... Great. But after clicking OK the focus should return in the URL bar.

Some similar suggestions were made in bug 54321, but it's not clear what 54321
covers right now.

jmd: fixing bug 28586 would not make this bug obsolete.
Summary: RFE: URL bar should keep focus after "Alert" on bad domain name → URL bar should not lose focus until (non-error) page starts to load

I don't know if this sholud be a new bug but anyway it's closely related to this
one:
There should be no alert box what so ever when a bad domain name is entered. Now
you have to close the alert box by pressing a key or by clicking the OK-button
with the mouse, which is totaly unnecessary navigation. If the error wolud be
displayed in the "browser window" (like when you get a forbidden message:
http://www.mozilla.org/nosuchfile.htm) and the focus would remain in the
URL-bar, you could faster correct the URL.

Yes, we should get rid of the host-not-found dialog (bug 28586).

[Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win95; en-US; rv:1.3a) Gecko/20021212]
Another test case is when I want to do a Google search but forget to press
DownArrow (twice) before Enter:
1. Type, for example, "mozilla chimera" in the URL bar
2. Press Enter
R. (gets the Alert dialog, ...)

INVALID now that error page is shown (with retry capability) instead of error dialog?
Comment 15•18 years ago

No, the existence of error pages has not solved this bug. If a domain cannot be found, for example, the most likely cause (as the error page itself states!) is that you've mistyped the address. If the address field always retained focus until a non-error page loaded, it would still be focused at this point, so you could correct the error. But it isn't, so you need to refocus it yourself.
