User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:26.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/26.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20131010004002
Steps to reproduce:
Highlight a block of text, then click the "text color" paint chip.
Actual results:
Sometimes a palette pops up to allow changing the text colour, and sometimes it doesn't.
If the colour palette does not pop up from clicking the paint chip, I can always make it pop up by going to the menu and selecting "Format -> Text Color". But I shouldn't have to do that — clicking the paint chip is supposed to work, every time.
There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to when the colour palette does or does not pop up.
Expected results:
The colour palette should always pop up in response to clicking the paint chip.
This bug seems fairly new. Clicking the paint chip always used to work just fine, until sometime in the last few weeks.
I'm using Earlybird 26.0a2 (2013-10-15).
I note the similar-sounding ancient bug #63571, but as I said, clicking the text colour paint chip used to work quite reliably; something has regressed recently, and I'm sure this new bug is not a duplicate of a bug from 12 years ago.
I am having the exact same problem and cannot access the text colour by clicking the paint chip although I can go up into the menu and change the colour using the format | text colour options
I notice if I close Thunderbird and then reopen it again it will work about 90% of the time, if I restart the computer it will work 100% of the time. This behaviour has only just started happening with the latest update.
I am on the current release version 24.0.1 and it did not happen previously because I use this particular function all of the time to highlight my text colour when doing replies.
Does the Text color icon look disabled? Or is is fine just does not popup the palette?
If is is disabled it should be greyed out as other icons. If it is not, hovering over it with the mouse should apply a thin border around the colored squares in the icon. So which case is it?
the text colour icon is completely disabled, the page background colour icon is there and available but the text colour icon is not selectable and is greyed out. This is happening on 4 different machines I own. Hovering over the text colour icon with the mouse has no effect, there is no then border displayed... I can still however change the text colour by selecting from the menu in the top bar but this defeats the purpose because it is slow and requires several steps.

For me, the text colour icon does NOT appear to be disabled. When I hover over the text colour icon, a border DOES show. Despite this, I still find that much of the time (randomly and unpredictably), clicking on the text colour icon simply does nothing.

Upping version setting to 28, since I've seen the problem in Earlybird 28. I got an upgrade to 29 just now; we'll see if that makes any difference, though I'm not holding my breath.
I am on the release channel Version 24.3.0 and its been happening for me for more than 1 year now, probably 2 years. The funny thing is sometimes it works correctly and most of the time it doesnt work, i dont understand the behavior.
OK guys, you seem to have similar symptoms as bug 883540. I've attached a fix there. Please try it out and report your findings.

Seems to be working as it used to, and is okay. Thanks for the fix.

I'm currently on Earlybird 30.0a2 (2014-03-29), and the text colour button seems to be working reliably for me now.
