Steps to reproduce:

Start a new message
Display Contacts Sidebar
Drag-and-drop a Contact into the To: box (the effect may be intermittent)


Actual results:

Address shows red, implying it is "unknown". The same Contact may indeed be shown in both black and red if added multiple times. 



Expected results:

Valid addresses that match existing address book entries  should be shown in black. Red usually indicates an unknown or invalid Contact.

I can reproduce using steps of comment 0 on first attempt

And, sounds odd, but I think I've also seen red addresses after autocomplete.

Perhaps related to bug 933677?  Although 933677 is reported as a more recent regression

I found the rootcause for these issues:
The extension " Contact Tabs 2.0.8" by speedball2001 is causing this issue.
For some reason it replaces the normal matching/search function of TB with its own.

I am not using that particular add-on. I wasn't sure if I'd seen this bug myself, but perhaps had  reported it on behalf of a gfsn user. 

However, in starting to compose an email rely to you I used drag-and-drop from the Sidebar and it went red. 

I do tend to use a large number of add-ons. Occasionally I sift through them looking for redundancies, but they all seem to be there for a good reason. ;-)

I just repeated the experiment in Safe Mode, all extensions disabled, same result. I contest that it isn't triggered by an active add-on. However, I am sure I have seen strange effects from an ''installed'' add-on, even when it's disabled.
