User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:24.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/24.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20130910160258
Steps to reproduce:
Windows Vista:
version 24
The colour icons on the 'Formatting Bar' - font color and background colour, no longer function, but you can use the 'Format' button on the 'Menu Bar' toolbar to make changes to colour.
Created a new Write message and then saved as draft.
selected the draft email and opened the saved draft message using 'Edit' in a new Write window.
highlight some text
click on 'font colour' icon located in the Formatting Bar.
If you also try to use the colour background icon, same result.
Actual results:
Nothing happens.
The small window with options on colour choice does not open.
Expected results:
The small window with options on colour choice should have opened.
Other people are reporting this:

Having now updated to version 24.1.0 I'm not finding this an issue, maybe updates to addons fixed the issue.
My issue is now resolved.

Shortened version of my original post:
Up until 2 days ago the font color button in the format bar was working whenever I made a new email. Now it does not function and I have to go to file menu to use format function there for color change to text.
I am running 24.1.0 Thunderbird, running Vista and no amount of uninstalling/reinstalling/deleting cache from browser/ rebooting computer and clearing dns from computer has helped.
I read here that this is fixed with this version but it appears to not be fixed. Is there any other ideas of what to do.
Flags: needinfo?
Um, it may have resolved for Anje, but not for me, in Vista 32 / 64 bit.
I still have problems in TB 24.1 with the * TOOLBAR icon * for changing text color, under specific conditions.
When the toolbar icon stops working, changing text color via menu option (Format > Text Color) still works.
Also saw it in at least 1 or 2 versions before 24.x.
The problem was reproduced by "sfhowes" in W-7 & 8.1, on https://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/no_thoughts_from_mods_on_changing_text_color_problem
My issue is when repling to or forwarding a message & add comments.
Reproducible - always.
Created new profile in default location;
only bare minimum of email accts & settings imported;
Imported No extensions, plugins, & only the very basic files from another profile, as needed to make email accts work:
regular mode:
begin a reply - toolbar format text color works.
Save reply draft. After saving, toolbar format text color does NOT work.
Closing reply draft, & re opening to edit makes no difference.
Safe Mode:
same profile / accts as above:
begin reply - toolbar format text color works.
Save reply draft. After saving, toolbar format text color does NOT work.
Closing reply draft, & re opening to edit makes no difference.
Can we change the status of this bug from "Resolved Invalid" to Open? Or should I file a new one?
Also, if I start new compose new messages, then save & try to continue composing, the change text color icon stops opening the colors GUI (same as in other 2 scenarios).
Does not work for me either in Ubuntu Linux 12.04 running Thunderbird 24.1.1. Sometimes the icons will work, sometimes they will not. Using the Format menu always works.
Vista: Update ..Issue has returned. So not fixed by 24.1.1 update.
senario one:
Any email that I select to 'Reply' to opens in a new Write window and allows me to change font colour using formatting Bar..
If I select to save as Draft, but decide to change the colour of highlighted text , then I cannot use Formatting Bar option.
Upom opening the 'reply' draft from Draft folder, the colour selector still does not function via Formatting Bar.
So the act of save as Draft in a 'Reply' situation, whether I continue to compose in the same window or close the window and reopen from Draft folder stops the use of the Formatting Bar to select text colour.
Senario two:
If I start to Write a new message I can select text colour.
If I save as Draft and continue to type, I cannot select to change via Formatting Bar.
If I close and reopen the draft to edit, then suddenly, I can select the colour via the Formatting bar, but this will stop again as soon as I save as draft.
So this method is Unlike a Reply saved as draft; opening from draft folder for editing works when the message was originally a new Write message, but nor if originally a new message created by a 'Reply'.
Colour selection does work via Composition Toolbar; Format > Text Colour
Also, the following may be connected or I may have not noticed it before:
in a new Write message or editing a draft, if I type a word in Black, then press Enter for new line and then type again and change the colour of that line to eg green. then if I highlight both words to change all to another colour, the icon in the Formatting Bar becomes clear - no colour, yet when I hover over it, the square gets a black outline and when I click on it, the Text Colour window opens and the 'last picked' colour is green, but there is no entry left of 'default' button.
Status: RESOLVED → UNCONFIRMED
Resolution: INVALID → ---
Same Issue - I've noticed a few other symptoms. After clicking "Reply" to an email, I cannot change text color in the message body via the toolbar. I can change the text color from menu Format->text color.
If I edit the email address in the "To:" edit box, the text in the edit box changes from black to red and then I can change text color via the toolbar in the message body. All this used to work OK until a few months ago.
This is with both XP & Vista.
Having the same issue in 27.0 beta, when opening a message window directly from the new mail notification popup. Replies to messages opened this way don't let me change the text color. Messages replied to from the main window seem to work fine.

Seeing the same problem for the last few releases. Thought it might have something to do with the Add-ons, so went to Help and selected Restart With Add-ons Disabled. Tried accessing format bar colors while in this "safe mode" and everything worked. So restarted Thunderbird in normal mode. The format bar colors (so far) work without problems.
If you are having this problem, try Restart With Add-ons Disabled, start a message and access the format bar color option (don't have to send the message), then restart normally.
Somewhere there's something that decides if the pop-ups should be displayed and it seems to be getting jammed up. Will post if the problem returns.

If I restart with Add-ons disabled" the color selection does work. However, the next time I start TB the problem is back. I went through the Add-ons menu and manually disabled everything I could find, yet doing this does not fix the problem. Apparently there are some add-ons that are being disabled in the "restart" process that are not showing up in the "Add-ons" menu.

let's move bugs changed to New out of Untriaged :)
assuming it's a regression, it would be good to determine the regression range

The bug as described up to comment 6 (non-working text color after Save as draft) should now be fixed in bug 883540.
The non-working text color after Reply is not yet sure.
If you could try out a current TB nightly or apply the patch manually to TB24 as described in bug 883540 comment 59 and try all your use cases, that would be very helpful. Thanks.

This post is March 22, 2104!
As I posted previously, I have 2 versions of Thunderbird on two different Windows 7 computers, and the color changing works fine on my Laptop, but does not work at all on my Desktop. There is not one simple answer for this problem, since it actually works fine on one computer but not on the other. I have gone from about version 24 to 28 on each one and if worked, it continues to work, if if it didn't work, it is not corrected and still does not work. There might be one file that is causing the problem, but when new versions are installed, it is not changed. If I actually knew how it worked, (i.e.) what has to happen to apply the color, I would be glad to check the size of my files that support it and see if there is any difference there. There are a lot of files and not sure what is involved. We need a solution that allows each of us to check to see if any particular files are different between the computers. I would like to get back to actually having this work, but until it does, will just have to work around the problem.

Ronald, you have not posted anything like that in this bug. You may have different values of the preference mail.compose.max_recycled_windows set on your different PCs.
Anje is the reporter of this bug so if he sees the bug is fixed then we can close this.
Bug 883540 must be the one that fixed this if it is fixed for him in TB24.4.
That fix is in TB 24.4 and TB 30. Testing with TB 28 does not help you anything. So please if you can still reproduce the problem in TB24.4 or TB31, then please open a new bug for your problem.

Anje where do you get to the point where you can set that value above?
just for the record on my computer:
mail.compose.max_recycled_windows; Value is set as Integer 1 (one)
If you can let me know how to enter that point, I will try to set it to 1 like you show. Since one computer works OK on the color set and the other not (both W7), I can compare values and see if changing from the current setting to a 1 helps.

Tools > Options > Advanced > General tab
or
menu icon > Options > Options > Advanced > General tab
click on 'Config Editor' button
it will tell you to be careful
In the top search type: mail.compose
and you will see a selection
look for 'mail.compose.max_recycled_windows'
double click on that line to open a small window which allows you to set the value.
then click on ok
close the window using top right X
click on ok to save changes to options.
I note that 'Comment 29' in this bug report: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=883540
mentions that a german user changed his to 0 (zero) to fix the issue.
Please make sure you are using TB version 24.4.0

Yes, this is the default value and with such value the bug should have been observed (before TB24.4). I confirm setting it to 0 may be a workaround for the bug in older versions.
But the text color bug should be fixed in TB24.4. so I urge everybody to try with the default value now and keep it at that if the problem disappeared.

this applies to setting mail.compose.max_recycled_Windows value in comment 22 above. Value set to 1
I changed the default value from 0 to 1 on this setting, and went back to Thunderbird and even with that new value, the color change function does not work. My current version of TB is 28. I even copied a line from my Word Program in color to the message that I was composing and the color reverted from red back to black. Something seems to be forcing the color to black somewhere in the program. I did not make any interventions on either of my computers when I installed the beta updates, however the Laptop has had the color change circuit work, but the Desktop has not had this Function working for maybe a year or so even with many new beta updates.

Ronald: Have you actually uninstalled Thunderbird via Control Panel > Programs and Features and then downloaded a fresh TB version 24.4.0 from this link.
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/all.html
Please report back on whether it then works.
