This bug, where an address list in the "To:" field is not accepted (it requires "user@host") has been reported and pronounced fixed. But Thunderbird still failed for me over several releases, even though it was pronounced fixed. So I completely removed Thunderbird, including all Library files, and reinstalled. It then worked properly. So it looks like some configuration file corruption.

I'm not experiencing this issue, but there are reports of this error occuring after update to 31.0. see: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1018118 https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1018113
Update to TB causing mail list to fail, just since yesterday. Message is "not a valid e-mail address because it is not of the form user@host". Using TB 31.1.0 and Windows 7. Is anyone working on fixing this bug?
Actually, the update maybe version 31.1 which is causing the issue. I've updated to 31.1 and tested. all is ok for me on Windows Vista. But more people with same issue asking on support forum: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1018077 https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1018076 https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1018202
I tested it right now and it worked in TB31.0 but fails now in TB31.1. Maybe caused by bug 1008718? But that would mean it is something else than the original report from TB24.

See bug 1060901. (Yes, exposed by bug 1008718.)
It fails for me in Win 7 (64 bit) TB 31.1.0
Using TB 31.1.0 and Windows 7 (64 bit). Group list was working fine until the update to 31.1.0, yesterday.
Also using TB 31.1.0 and Win7 64bit. List was working until update to 31.1.0 on 9/2/2014.
Yes, it's bug 1060901.
For me this problem started 0n 9/2/2014 the same day 31.1.0 was released and the same day there was an update to Windows 7. Coincidence ? It appears to be a different problem thatn 1060901 as the rejected mail lists were not in quotes. My solution has been to use the older TB version 31.0 and shut off TB updates until TB 31.1.0 is fixed.

You can download (and install it over the existing copy) from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/31.0/ - but of course, that contains bug 1008718 (and also security fixes etc.). Choose your poison wisely.
Any word on when we will have a version of TB without the mailing list bug?

I used system restore picking a restore point just before the TB 31.1.0 update. However, this can casue oother issues for some users depending upong other system changes they may have made sincn the restore point date. But for me it was timely.
The security releases are on a 6 week cycle.
Thank you DerykN I tried Restore three times and every one failed for some reason. I did get an error message but decided I don't have time to sort it all out. I'm using Gmail for my list emails until the problem is sorted.
I have this issue today. I updated to solve other issues and this issue occurred. Windows 7. Also working very clowly with major interruptions and lockups.
I have the same problem TB 31.1.0, Windows 8.1
Has the more recent 31.1.1 solved this problem with Email lists?
Yes. I'm closing this bug since the original issue has nothing to do with what people keep discussing here.

Confirming, I'm seeing reports in support forum that version 31.1.1 has fixed the issue with mailing lists.
