In Mozilla 0.9.4, the number of columns available in the Search results window
dramatically dropped. I see absolutely no reason for that.
Reproduction:
Try to show all non-flagged messages from the Mozilla mailing lists. You can't do
that by sorting in the thread pane, because you cannot sort after To/cc. You
need Search.1. Open Search dialog
2. Enter rules to find Mozilla mailing list posts. (To/cc has "mozilla-" and has
"@mozilla.org")
3. Try to get the non-flagged messgaes together.
Actual result:
Impossible. I can't even see in the search window, if a message is flagged.
Expected result:
Both:
- I can search for "flagged" true/false
- I see the flag in the results window and sort after it.
This bug is about the latter. Allow me to add/show any column which is available
in the thread pane.
Preferably even remember the selection of column shown.
Rationale:This is a very important feature that is essential to my mail
processing. If I want to use Mozilla Mailnews all the time, this feature must
come back.

cc sspitzer, hwaara, why did we take out this feature ?
yes. There is already no "goto message" button in search message already.
That "go next flagged message" feature is the only possible replacement. Now
that you took out the flag column, oh man... are you forcing me to stick with
netscape 4.78?
*** Bug 104754 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
It was decided not to include flag or read/unread column from discussion in bug
76216 (that bug has a later regression bug 81076). This was also included as a
note in the UI spec http://www.mozilla.org/mailnews/specs/search/#Mail .
I'll leave this open for another confirming decision for next release...

I don't think the solving of the bug 76216 was a regression. The bug 76216 was
there to solve a regression (compare to Netscape 4.7) : the column Location was
missing. (Actualy, it was bug 74851, which was make as a duplicate of bug
44341, which was forward tp 76216). Please make sure that we don't supress that
column again to add the one in the thread windows.
I don't think it's pertinent to show all the column the first time you open the
window. I think the five columns that exist actualy are a good choice for the
first display. Would it be ok with everybody if we change the spec in the
following way :
Subject, Sender, Date, Location and Priority are displayed by default
All the other column available in the thread pane could be added by the user.
I thing the default should be in a user configuration file, but that's another
issue.

The fix caused this bug, in that sense it caused a regression (although
deliberate / intentional).
However, the current default choice is fine with me, as long as I can add other
columns and (ideally) that choice persists for subsequent opens.
At least for commercial, we never agreed upon/spec'd having the flag column
available in Search.
Still exists in dec14 commercial trunk

I for one am in favor of bringing back the flag column in the search window.
That way I can search for messages, locate a message, flag it, then be able to
find its entire thread in the main window. My life in newsgroups an mailing
lists is very troublesome without this feature.

Not to mention I could really do with out the priority column in the search
window. I would rather have the flag column over the priority column. Who
marks their messages with a priority these days? I've been using Mozilla for
years and I still have no clue how to give my messages priority, and I don't
really have a need to learn how.

There's an old patch at the dupe which implements what this bug requests.
Flag as critierion is bug 272709 (and has been implemented).
