Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.2; WOW64; rv:30.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/30.0 (Beta/Release) Build ID: 20140605174243 Steps to reproduce: 1) I opened the help, and clicked "check for updates" TBird report back that I was up to date -- this was false (I had received, minutes earlier, a suggestion to update from 24.5.0 to the subsequent, and I closed it by checking later). In trying to discover why TBird was reporting that its 24.5 was up to date, I realized that my WiFi internet connection had gone off. For some reason, rather than reporting "no access to the update server", TBird reported I was up to date. This is the principle part of the bug report. When I restarted the internet connection, clicking on "check for updates" initiated a download. 2) Rather than asking me if I wanted to update, it undertook the download without asking. I thought this behavior, under a separate bug, had been fixed already. [should I open this as a second bug....?] 3) After the download was completed, TBird reporting it was updating (with the busy symbol. It did not suggest that I restart to update. I closed the help window, and reopened it, and only then did it display a "restart" button. Hitting the restart caused the closure and restart, finally, to 24.6. [is this a 3rd bug?] [are the 2nd and 3rd items, merely artifacts of the first one....? 2 & 3 have happened in earlier updates, and reported...]
1) see bug 701733 for the same problem in Firefox. 2) should be fixed by bug 707489, but only since TB29. 3) Not sure about that

John, can you retest this?

Wayne:
Using 60.6.1 [32 bit]
Shutting of Internet, then restarting Thunderbird,

When I open help-->about
TBird about dialog reports "Thunderbird is up to date" without my intervention.
I wouldn't expect that, all, and still would expect it to report no connection available.

Cant test with a gloss added that TBird is , in fact, -out- of date, as it is, in fact, up to date.....
So, I am not sure if it is storing the result of a prior test, or just flat out wrong...

I still have problems with the update -- I have to log in as an admin, open TBird, there, and then do the update on that separate admin instance. close it, then reopen TBird normally. Same with FF. But that is another bug/issue, long ago reported. Also, will engage an update without asking, rather than prompting, which was another bug/issue, long ago reported.

Version: 24 Branch → 60

We tend to set version per when the bug was reported, because we can assume an open bug is still relevant to all subsequent and current versions. But if you want to get specific, version can be set in tracking flags
