"Search messages" in nntp-connected newsgroups offers only "Subject" 
and "Sender",  whereas the search in IMAP-connetcted mail folders offers all 
possibilities (date, age ...). Tested on Mozilla 0.9.4+
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:0.9.4+) Gecko/20010930

This is the correct representation of options.  News does offer less header
search options than mail.

in offline mode we should be able to search everything.  however this should be
a dupe

What duplicate, please provide a number?  We do provide an extended list of
criteria in offline news (0.9.4 branch).  I don't think the reporter was
referring to offline, but whatever.  Please, timeless, let me know what you
meant as the duplicate.

well i was probably thinking of bug 47857 see comments by alecf (also bug 38297
, perhaps related to bug 83968 see also bug 83971).

personally i'd prefer to offer the full ui and if the server is unable to do the
search the user wants to ask the user if it's ok to switch to offline mode to
perform the search (and then switch back upon completion) -- this behavior is
basically how clever people used nc4.
