This is a tracking bug for planning and implementation of new feature work for
Netscape's MachV project. All plan/spec/design documents should be posted on
mozilla.org and discussed in the appropriate newsgroup(s), not here. New
dependency bugs will be created for any subtasks. Please use this bug only for
discussing the plan itself, or to add links to any pertinent discussion elsewhere.
Proposed requirements:
* Implement Tip of the Day that explains to users various functionality in
the product at start-up.
* Need to be able to turn off this feature from the Tip of the Day dialog.
Current engineering plan:
For dialog similar to other products:
components: dialog - 3 days, tip database - 2 days
This is valuable, but not high priority (P3?). Not just for newbies, see
Gnome/KDE. Could just open up Tip tab in Sidebar. 1 day?
Need content for tip database.
Currently assigned to ben@netscape.com for planning/design.
Implementation estimate: 1-5 days

In the spirit of making this bug less annoying to implement, I propose that we
come up with possible tips that could be used in Mozilla.
From bbaetz: "Rheeeet!"
From me: "Never run with scissors."
Any others?

r=law for the planning info (*not* the suggested tips :-).
I think we need some more detail to understand how this dialog actually works
and what the tip database is. I wonder if there's not some simpler scheme
where we just open a new browser window (sans chrome, maybe?) to some server-
provided tip content (in html format). The only other thing that is absolutely
necessary is some additional widgetry to make it easy for the user to turn it
off.

Having tips on a server would be a good idea because the database could be
updated - no more reading the same tips again and again. However, some users
will start up the product when they're offline, so it would be good to ship the
product with some tips built in and/or download tips when online that can be
shown when the user starts in offline mode.

"Tip of the Day" implementations are the hallmark of bloated software, imho.
Seldom am I opposed to implementing new stuff, but please don't implement this
in Mozilla.

Bill Law,
> r=law for the planning info
Which planning info?
VERIFY DUP.
> Please discuss this elsewhere.
I respect your wish, but you have to point us to a concrete place to discuss
this then, so that we all use the same one.
Until then, please forgive me when I reply to some comments here.
> "Tip of the Day" implementations are the hallmark of bloated software
Are you suggesting that Mozilla is *not* bloated?
> Having tips on a server would be a good idea
No. It is a privacy problem, and a reliability one (the server might go away,
temporarily or permanently). (Same applies to online docs and so forth.)
Not to mention that it will be slow.

Reopening. This is a TRACKING bug for work assigned to my team. As such, it
cannot possibly be a duplicate of any other bug. Leave it alone. Discuss your
feelings about it anywhere you want, with n.p.m.browser and n.p.m.ui being
reasonable forums, but not here.

I thought we all used the same bug tracking. But if you insist...

Is there any progress on this? Frankly, I'm having difficulty understanding this
whole web browsing thing, and I'm hoping that Tip of the Day might help to clue
me in. Chop Chop!

This targetted for FUTURE. Should we remove it from blocking Bug 102472, since its
current target is outside the dev window for the next release?

actually, if this is a meta, then it should depend on 19463 rather
than block 19463
