Honestly, the recent style update for the new tab page is quite deceiving.
Here are the issues I'd like to point out :
- Huge tile size
I have a quite big display as a Windows user (1600 * 900) and I only see 2 rows of tiles. Not everybody has a shiny, huge retina display. Most users have reasonably sized screens these days. I think we should restore the older tile size, or dynamically size tiles depending on your screen size
- Bad esthetics for thumbnails
The new styling adds huge rounded corners to the thumbnails. Those honestly look completely out of place in Firefox (try to find me that big rounded corners in the current UI) and they look even worse on Windows.
One other thing is the blue shadow on hover, this thing only looks good on OSX, and OSX Yosemite got rid of those, so I don't understand how this fits in any place here especially that Windows 8 is allergic to those.
- Changing tile title colors ?
I've seen the spec, and I saw that the title was red in some cases. I don't think we should do like Tab Mix Plus and bring a whole rainbow to the new tab page. We should just keep it consistent whether it's a pinned/sponsored or whatever tile. The old sponsored arrow isn't a problem since it doesn't disrupt the visual consistency of the text, and rather adds a new indicator.
- Icons
The new icons look really fat to me and very strange.
The first example is the options icon, it looks rather weird sized like this, especially when it's doubled sized compared to other elements on the page. I think we should rather take the devtools or toolbar options icon in this case. Also, that open state shadow just looks heavy, we should just get rid of it.
For the pin and remove buttons, they just don't look very firefox-y to me. I haven't seen these icons anywhere in the UI. I think we should either go back to the old style, or use the tab bar close icon.

Also, the title indicator isn't clear to me at all, I don't understand which tile is pinned or not. I had to use the devtools to figure that out.

And weirdly, both gray and blue were considered as pinned.

I believe most of the notes in comment 0 are also in bug 1044602. Getting 3 rows of tiles should be fixed by bug 1045769 freeing up some whitespace. Rounded corners reducing in bug 1048148. Red titles were made blue in bug 1043399. Shrinking icon sizes bug 1045751.
