User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:35.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/35.0 Build ID: 20150125222008 Steps to reproduce: Put "lake B" in the search bar, pressed <enter> Actual results: Finds all occurences of "lake" whereas I know their are only one or two emails with the phrase "deep lake B represents a hazard" Expected results: Should have found the one or two emails with the exact phrase "lake B"
I failed to find a match for an existing bug on this. But I cannot believe one would not exist. The minimum word length we will index is 3 characters. So I doubt we will ever index what you are suggesting. But we should at least warn why you are not getting appropriate results, and I am pretty sure there is a bug about that. You can however search for this using Edit | Find | Search Messages - where you can search all folders within a single account at a time.

Okay, so how are users supposed to search for phrases with 2-character words?

Okay, so how are users supposed to search for phrases with 2-character words?

You cannot. That would require implementing such things as :

  • Bug 523183 - [faceted search] gloda fulltext search does not match partial terms (by default), eats short terms potentially causing misleading search failures
  • Bug 544580 - gloda tokenizer could probably do a better job of indexing numbers
  • Bug 1175855 - Global search should accept quotation marks around expressions to search for exact phrase/string
  • Bug 1722170 - Global Search for multiple words or hyphen/minus connected strings not working or not properly documented
