I would like to archive mail, not delete it, if possible. iOS gives me the option to change the default from "delete" to "Archive".
It would also be great to be able to delete/archive with a swipe. Right now left and right swipes in the email app (while in a folder) do nothing, it would be handy to give them features. (there's also no left/right swipe feature in individual messages, but that's OK)
Finally, after deleting (or archiving once that feature is enabled :) ) it would be nice to be able to choose if the next action was "go to the next message" or "go to inbox". Right now it only goes to the inbox.

Perhaps this bug could be narrowed down to simply adding an archive feature?
As an ex-Android user, I appreciated having separate "archive" and "delete" buttons in the Gmail app. I suppose "always archive" would be ok as well, but slightly less useful. I'm also not particularly fussed if there's a swipe gesture or not. The main requirement is just being able to easily archive mail.

Many good suggestions in here! Relevant existing bugs:
- Bug 951380 covers having "delete/trash" be "archive" on gmail.
- Bug 1093042 covers a more generic archive mechanism that would work on all account types, possibly along the lines of Thunderbird's support for date-based archiving.
- Bug 1105959 is an enhance feature request for swiping to move between messages.
- https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1102967#c4 discusses workflow mechanisms that would cover the "what to do on delete" case.
- which is mentioned in bug 1104887 which is about having "go to next message".
I think that just leaves:
- swipe to archive / do other stuff.
Should we morph this bug to be on that?
Note that in general UX has avoided using swipe gestures. I'm unsure if the haida edge-swipes to move backward/forward between apps are compatible with that or not. (Maybe now that we're targeting better devices with bigger screens and better digitizers it's practical?)
