Details

Observed on Thunderbird 37 running on Ubuntu 15.04 w/ Unity.

$ uname -a
Linux XXXXXXXX 3.19.0-22-generic #22-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 16 17:15:15 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Observed behaviour: I am unable to compose a reply to an email. The composer window appears in the foreground, but keystrokes appear to still be going to the main window (e.g. pressing the Del key will delete an email). Clicking on the composer window does not change this. I can select body text in the composer window, but it appears white-on-gray, as it would in a background window.

Expected behaviour: focused window should have focus. :)

Steps to reproduce: this doesn't always happen, and I haven't been able to isolate any specific sequence of triggering events. Once this happens, it doesn't seem to go away until I close and restart Thunderbird.

This seems related to bug 942610, though I don't get the 5 to 10 seconds of 'grace' reported in that issue.

The Googles say this bug has been around for a while, but I've only started noticing it recently. See https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread.php?63836-Keystrokes-sent-to-window-without-focus-in-Firefox-Thunderbird and others, under different distros, with different window managers.

What did you try?
And did it help?
If you use Firefox, do you experience anything similar?

Chris, Leho, do you see this?

Never seen this. The only thing I can think of similar is my recent experience with Wayland on gnome-3.20 + multimonitor, after re-arranging monitor layout in Display settings. But I highly doubt it's related.
